Ike's Visir To Oregon This Week
Expected To Give McKay Big Boost

mands of both parties are
agreed on one thing at least in
connection with the hot sen
atorial campaign in Oregon
that the visit this week of Presi
dent Eisenhower will probably
help the chances of Douglas Mc
Kay in his effort to overtake
Sen. Wayne Morse.
Republicans, of course, are
pinning great hopes for McKay
on the personal appearance of
Eisenhower in Oregon, otherwise
the president would not have
added this long trip to his limit
ed campaign schedule.
The attitude of Democratic
strategists here was expressed
by Sen. George Smathers (D
Fla.), chairman of the Demo
cratic senatorial campaign com
mittee which is doing every
thing it can think of to assist
Morse.
"I think it (Ike's visit) will
help McKay," said Smathers. "I
don't think there's any doubt
about that. The president, of
course, is still personally very
popular and when he goes out
there he always is able to at
tract a big crowd and undoubted
ly Douglas McKay will be all
wrapped around in those coat
tails and every time he turns
around you're going to see Doug
la; McKay. So that won't hurt
him."
Washington Critical
Another good reason for
Eisenhower's visit is GOP hopes
of nailing down both Oregon
and Washington states for the
president just like he carried
them in 1952. Washington state
is considered on the critical list,
in view of the strong showing
made by Democratic Sen. War
ren G. Magnuson in the Septem
ber primary. Oregon is regard
ed as much more likely to go for
Eisenhower again.
The camp of Adlai Stevenson,
however, has added Oregon to
the list of "maybe" states fol
lowing the visit to the state last
week of the Democratic con-

given Stevenson by Oregon
Democrats who believe Morse is
running so strong that he may
help Stevenson, rather than vice
versa.
Stevenson's strategy national
ly is based on (1) an assumption
that he will carry the South and
its border states, 2) that he will
lose without coming even close
in many states of the North, (3)
but that he can win in enough
northern states to capture a ma
jority of the electoral votes
needed for victory.

Those northern states where
Stevenson strategists believe he
has the best chance are those in
which the Democrats have been
showing strength locally, such as
Pennsylvania. '
So there is perhaps as much i
truth as wit in the observation I
that Stevenson hopes to ride
into the White House on the coat-1
tails of the Democratic party, j
while the Republicans hope to
ride home on the coattails of the
President.

If Oregon were only closer
to the nation's capital, the state

bevy of cabinet wives on the
political stump in behalf of one
of their own, Mabel McKay and
her capaigning husband. Re

ware. It was just a one-day fling,
talking to women's groups and
passing out literature.

Missing Youngster
Found Unharmed
New York (U.P.) Police
found a missing six-week-old
Negro girl alive and unharmed
early Saturday and arrested her
alleged kidnaper.
Patrolmen Salvatore Trovato
and John Tomasulo recovered
the baby, Joanne Wells, in
Brooklyn apartment occupied by
Mary Jackson, 35, and her husband.
Police said that Albert Cor-
bin, 23, told Trovato and Tom
asulo he had information on the
kidnaping and led the police
men to the nearby Jackson
apartment.
Joanne was reported kidnap
ed two days ago from the apart
ment of Clarice Hall, a baby
sitter, by a woman posing as a
friend of the infant s mother.
The arresting officers said the
man in the Brooklyn apartment
identified himself as Richard
Glanton and said he was the
common law husband of Mary
Jackson.
They said the Jackson wo
man became pregnant without
Glanton's knowledge and check
ed into a hotel last Saturday and
delivered the baby stillborn
there.
Not wishing to disappoint
ulanton, she struck up an ac
quaintance with Mrs. Wells at
a hospital where Joanne's moth
er worked as a nurse's aid.
From her conversation with
Mrs. Wells, she learned that Jo
anne was at a baby sitter's
home and picked up enough in
formation to pose as a friend of
the child s mother.
