Heavenly Sea Visible Near
Flying Horse in Southeast
By FAY BENTLEY
How grief -stricken we would
be if a huge bird snatched one
of our children! After the shepherd-prince,
Ganymede, had been
carried away, at Jupiter's com
mand, the father was overcome
with despair. The lad's compan
ions had seen the eagle fly to
Mt. Olympus, but the knowledge
that a god had taken his son
brought no comfort to the strick
en parent.
Jupiter, in an effort to make
amends, presented the king with
a pair of divine horses but even
this was of no avail. Finally, the
king of the gods went so far as
to place Ganymede with his
flowing cup among the "watery"
constellations.
Heavenly Sea
That portion of the sky below
Pegasus the Flying Horse, in
the south and east, is known as
the Heavenly Sea. Here we find
Aquarius, the Water Pourer;
Pisces, the Fishes; Piscis Aus
trinus, the Southern Fish; Cetus,
the Sea Monster; Delphinus, the
Dolphin; Equuleus, the Sea
Horse; and Capricornus, the Sea
Goat.
Because rain always fell in
Babylonia, when the sun was
between the earth and this reg
ion of the sky, the ancient Baby
lonians always associated this
partion of the celestial sphere
with water, and named the con
stellations accordingly.
Most of the animals for which
constellations, or sky pictures,
are designated were familiar to
the people of the Old Testament
who lived in Mesopotamia. This
leads to the belief that these fig
ures originated in that part of
the world. It is believed that
most of the constellations and
their legends were developed
about 2000 years before the birth
of Christ, although it is impos
sible to fix an exact date.
Aquarius, the Water Pourer,
is supposed to be Ganymede, the
shepherd lad who became cup
bearer for the gods on Mt. Olym-
pus. The Water Pourer, himself.
is not plainly shown. However,
the Urn or Jar is pictured as a
'Y' of four sparkling stars.
Locating Water Jar
To locate the Urn or Water
Jar of Aquarius, look to the
southern sky about 9 p.m. The
four stars forming this small
Y lie about half way between
the horizon and the overhead
point (zenith) and almost exact
ly due south, just beneath the
triangular head of Pegasus the
Flying Horse.
On Oct. 16, an imaginary line
extended due south from the
North Star will touch the Urn
of Aquarius before reaching the
southern horizon. Each evening,
after this date, the Urn or Water
Jar will be found a little more
to the west of this imaginary
line, which is called the Merid
ian. A glitter of scattered stars
representing a never ending
stream flows from the Urn and
ends abruptly at the bright, first
magnitude star, Fomalhaut, in
the constellation, Piscis Aus
trinus, the Southern Fish.
Fomalhaut (pronounced foam-al-o),
an important navigational
star, is easy to locate as it shines
without a rival low in the south
ern sky.
Aquarius is one of the 12 con
stellations of the Zodiac. These
star groups form a ring in space
opposite the ecliptic or the path
in which our sun seems to
travel.
The apparent movement of the
sun is due to our planet's annual
journey around the sun. The
earth, sun, and one of the 12
Zodiacal constellations will al
ways be in a straight line; a dif
ferent constellation each month.
When the earth, sun, and Aqua
rius are in a straight line with
the sun in the middle, the sun
is said to be "in" the constella
tion Aquarius.
