"Your what?" I said, breaking
into the old fellow's story.
"My three-shooter, and then
clubbing it, I , . ."
"But I never heard of such a
thing," I said, "a three-shooter!
Mr. Aylward, the younger,
didn't look especially amused.
He was just launching into a
short speech on why his uncle
should not be too closely ques
tioned when the old fellow re
turned. "Here you are. Gage," Mr.
Aylward said, shoving a gun
into my hand. "That's the very
three-shooter I was talking
about. Look it over. It's a Mar
ston 1864 model, and a mighty
handy little weapon."
It was a three-shooter, all
right. There were three four
inch, round barrels stacked one

The auctioneer held up his
hand in which he clasped a
book.
"The next item," he said, "is
this nice old copy of Walton's
'Compleat Angler' with a letter
pasted in it to Robert Loring, of
Philadelphia, a letter with early
American stamps. What am I
bid?"
Scott's Stamp Catalogue said
that the stamps consisted of a
vertical pair with a listed value
of $60 when cut off the cover
as "cut squares." The stamps
were square in shape with a
circular design showing an
American eagle surrounded by
the legend "T h e American
Letter Mail Co.," an organiza
tion founded by one Lysander
Spooner back in 1844 for car
rying mail between Boston and
Philadelphia and way points.
The stamps, black and gray
in color, had sold originally for
five cents each. They were en
graved and had been cancelled
by hand, in black ink, with the
initials "I. G."

know what that means, it is un
doubtedly the rarest of textiles."
"Byssus," I said, that's what
the Egyptians called the fabric
they used to wrap mummies in.

feet. He was top heavy from
three bullets in him."
From the date of the letter
in the envelope, as well as from
certain evidence in the stamps
themselves, it was evident that
they had been made and used
in the year 1844, several months
prior to the issuance of the first
United States stamp.
By the time I had absorbed
that information the bidding had
slowed down to the point where
the auctioneer was announcing
it was going at $75.
I bid $80, and that started it
up again. By the time I had
chance to make another bid the
figure had reached $165, which
was far and away above what
I was prepared, to offer on such
short notice, especially since I
was sure the names of the cor
respondents had no historical
value.
And they didn't have, so far
as I subsequently heard, but the
man who got the bid at S165 did
very well, reselling the item
some weeks later for $500 a
price that shows how having the
complete envelope enhances the
value of a stamp.

in linen or silk and which they
spoke of generally as byssus."
He raised the cape in one hand
and let it fall into the other,
forming a golden, shimmering
pile.
"But where did you get it,"
I asked, "and what is it worth?"

going to auction off, and as for
what it's worth, well that's
pretty hard to say.
"But I'll tell you this much.
It will go only at a private auc
tion, a most exclusive affair.
And for the simple reason that
foot for foot this will make the
finest mink or marten look like
cheap muskrat. It's pure gold,
boy, platinum plated."

Roar of Airplane
Announces Church
Miami, Fla. (U.R) The roar of
an airplane motor has a unique
meaning to the natives of the
out islands of the Bahamas. It
means their "church" has arriv
ed. The Rev. Talmage Butler car
ries the gospel to hundreds of
natives spread throughout the
islands by means of a seaplane.
After his plane lands at the vil
lage, the 27-year-old Assemblies
of God minister preaches his
sermon from a pontoon of his
four-seater craft.
When the minister first be
gan his flying-preacher career
three years ago, the natives
came to see him land and talk
merely out of curiosity.
But Rev. Butler said that now
when his plane lands, they gath
er because they want to "listen
to the word of God."

He said he saw the need for
his type of ministry five years
ago when he visited his cousin,
a pastor in Nassau. He learned
that there was little missionary
work in the out islands, he said,
there are few roads connecting
villages.
Four Planes
After the visit with his cousin,
he returned to the Southwestern
Bible Institute in Waxahachie,
Tex., to complete his theological
training with the idea of return
ing to the islands as a flying
"circuit rider."
With his wife, Marjorie, the
Kilgore, Tex., minister has been
"preaching on the fly" ever ever
since.
He makes his home base at
Cherokee Sound, in Abaco Is
land, one of the larger of the
sub-tropical islets.
The hardest part of being a
flying preacher, said the min
ister, is getting new planes. He's
on his fourth one now.
