auditor Orville Hodge testified
Tuesday he spent $200,000 on
"political contributions."
Hodge, now serving a prison
term for his $1,300,000 raid on
the state treasury, testified be
fore the Senate Banking com-,
mittee.
He said his contributions to
the Republican campaign in Illi
nois in 1952 came from his own
funds.
Committee chairman Sen. J.
William Fulbright (D.-Ark.) ex
pressed doubt.
Hodge said he spent $1,500,
000 on the 1952 primary and
$50,000 on the election.
Earlier, Hodge said he could
not recall what he did with $85,
000 handed him in a lump sum
by a bank teller during his loot
ing of state funds.
Fulbright promptly accused
Hodge of lying.
At one point, the former play
boy politician who lived in the
lap of luxury said he is worried
now about how his wife will be
able to make ends meet.
Hodge, who began testifying
at the opening session of the
hearing Monday, was excused
today after Fulbright rebuked
him severely for evading questions.

Seek 2nd Slayer
Lancaster, Calif. (U.R) - - Au
thorities are searching for clues
m an effort to establish a mo
tive for the fatal stabbing of
a pretty, red-haired, 29-year-old
housewife, the second woman
slain in the same neighborhood
here within two days.
Ironically, Mrs. Sally Carp
had expressed fear for her own
safety following the knife slay
ing early Sunday of Jodie Diane
Burford, 20-year-old choir girl,
who lived only two blocks away.
A 17-year-old youth who was
in custody at the time of the
Carp killing, had confesed mur
dering Miss Burford, sheriff's
deputies reported. '
The boy, Charles Raymond
Elms, was arrested a few hours
before Mrs. Carp was stabbed
in her home Monday while her
husband, Alan, was at work.

called cirrhosis or hardening or

Since the last World War, the
medical literature has been full
of articles on hepatitis and I
have read dozens of them. The
impression I get is that there is
no good drug treatment for the
disease, and no special diet
worth trying. Some time ago
Army physicians who had treat
ed hundreds of these cases wrote
that the best diet was a good full
generous one, such as will main
tain the soldier's nutrition at a
high level.
If I had a severe form of hep
atitis about all I would know
to do would be to pray that I
would be left enough good liver
