What color is your automo
bile? Did your wife decide on
the color? If she didn't you must
have her well trained. You are
one in a thousand among hus
bands. Anyway, research indi
cates dull-colored cars are in
volved in the most collisions. Es
pecially green cars. Those in the
least number of such accidents
are red cars. With yellow and

Plsns Not
Was nice and cool for the foot
ball openers in the New York
area this season. It is not always
thus. I once played in a late Sep
tember football game in Hobo
ken, N.J., against Stevens Insti
tute. The temperature was 83 in
the shade. I played the entire
game. I lost 14 pounds. Yes, sir.
That's right, 14 pounds in one
afternoon. I wasn't overweight
either. Weighed 190 at start of
game.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Is it
true that London policemen do
not cary pistols or any type of
guns? A. That's right. Members
of the metropolitan police force
of London are not armed. Q. Can
a bachelor adopt a child in this
country? A. Yes. sir. However, it
is a very difficult procedure and
is seldom done. Incidentally,
Pierre-Louis Guerin, the Paris
showman who is a bachelor, has
six adopted children. The young
sters live with him on his mag
nificent estate at Chantilly. Q.
In what opera was Caruso ap
pearing in San Francisco at the
time of the great earthquake and
fire in that city? A. Carmen.
Guide to Gals
Leo (July 24-Aug. 23) females
have a very strong belief in the
equality of men and women.
When a Leo woman wants a ca
reer, and she usually does, her
husband should not interfere.
Not that it would do him any
good but would make things
very unpleasant. The Leo girls
are brilliant, clever, witty and
sweetly but effectively dynamic.
They are excellent home mana
gers if they have all the house
keeping gadgets on the market
plus a maid and a cock. They
are excellent mothers. They will
stand for no interference as to
the manner in which a child
should be reared. Especially not
by mothers-in-law. Leo women,
when aroused, throw things at
their mothers-in-law. Or so say
the stargazers.
These Measurements
The quoting of the bust, waist
and hip measurements of female
celebrities is currently much
overdone. However, if your wife,
daughter or sister-in-law aspire
to be victorious in a beauty con
test or wish to acquire a well
paying position as a model, it
will be well for them to note
that practically all contest win
ners and high salaried models
have waist measurements of
either 23 or 24 inches.
Common Cold
When winter comes from
around the corner do you suffer
irom that highly irritating and,
at times, dangerous affliction
known as the common cold?
How about sinus trouble? What
preventive measures do you take
against these ailments? I heard
of a man who decided to try
wearing an old fashioned flannel
nightshirt in the winter. Also a
sleeping cap. He says he hasn't
had a cold since so doing. Nor is
he bothered with sinus trouble
any more. He credits the night
cap with having prevented the
sinus trouble.
There were 17 horses coupled
in the field at Belmont park re
cently. Was a 28-horse race. So
you could have 17 horses run

ladies present really went for
that seeming bargain. However,
not one field horse finished in
the money!
Nixon Denounces
Adlai's Criticism
Washington lU.R) Vice Pres
ident Richard M. Nixon Sunday
denounced Adlai E. Stevenson's
criticism of the adminstration
as "ill-judged, ill-timed, ill-
phrased remarks."
Nixon said in a statement that
although he would prefer to cam
paign on issues rather than per
sonalities, "I intend to nail per
sonally on the spot every dis
tortion and every misrepresen
tation of the Eisenhower record
by Mr. Stevenson."
The vice president will leave
Tuesday on another two-week
campaign trip. It will take him
first to Texas and the Far West
and then into the Midwest.
When the current political
campaign began, flixon said, the
Democratic presidential candi
date said it was his intention
to debate the issues in an in
telligent; fair and forthright
manner.
"Unfortunately, it is now ap
parent that Mr. Stevenson's ad
visers have convinced him that
in order to promote his ambi
tions he must adopt for his cam
paign an operating method that
is cut close to the political cloth
of the man he has accepted as
his associate in this campaign,
former President Harry Tru
man," Nixon said.
Nixon, Kefaiiyer
Agree on Necessity
To Preserve Israel
Washington U.R) Vice
President Richard M. Nixon and
Sen. Estes Kefauver agreed Sun
day that preserving the state of
Israel is in the best interests of
the United States.
But the two vice presidential
candidates, in speeches to the
59th annual Zionist convention,
differed as to whether the Eisen
hower administration is doing
enough to help establish peace
in the Middle East
Nixon said that President
Eisenhower and Secretary of
State John Foster Dulles have
worked ceaselessly to promote
peace between Israel and its
Arab neighbors. This, he said,
will continue to be one of the
administration's "top o b j e c
tives." He said the administration
recognizes that "preservation of
the independence of Israel is in
the best interests" of the United
States and "of world peace it
self." He said that making the Mid
dle East crisis a political issue
"will serve neither the interests
of Israel or the United States."
Kefauver, who spoke at a dif
ferent time but from the same
platform as Nixon, attacked ad
ministration Middle East poli
cies and Mr. Eisenhower person
ally. He said "pious platitudes from
no matter how high a source
will never bring about the kind
of peace for which the whole
world yearns."
He also charged that Dulles
helped bring on Egypt's seizure
of the Suez canal by offering
U.S. help to the Egyptians to
build the Aswan dam and then
backing down later on the offer.
He said this was a "high price
to pay for the privilege of watch
ing Mr. Dulles show off like the
handsome young man on the fly
ing trapeze."
Eugene Gasoline
Price Cut in War
Eugene U.R) Several Eu
gene service station operators
have cut pump prices as much
as three cents per gallon in the
past week to meet competition
as a price war among dealers
flared. .
Prices a week ago quoted reg
ular at 32.9 cents per gallon and
premium at 36.9 cents per gal
lon. Poster prices at major out
lets dropped to 28.9 cents for
regular and 32.9 cents for pre
mium. One dealer posted a large sign
at his station proclaiming "Reg
ular 20.9 gallon, taxes extra."

New York Righthander Tom Sturdivant on pitching the Yan

"I'm still numb. Yogi (catcher Berra) just called 'em and I just
threw 'em."
Washington Sen. Albert Gore (D-Tenn.) on politics! spending: i
". . . It is healthier for both political parties to receive many
contributions than to depend on a relatively few major ones."
Cairo Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser on the future
of the United Nations:
"The United Nations today is passing through a decisive ex
perience in its history, which will determine whether it is to win
the respect of world public opinion or to collapse as did the League
of Nations." .
New York Dodger catcher Roy Campanella summing up Sun
day's 6-2 loss to the Yankees:
"He's (Yankee pitcher Tom Sturdivant) a smart pitcher, but
we got a smart one tomorrow. Old Sal's (Maglie) pitching, ain't
he?"
Is That So?
Want to be a master woods
man? Then gather round you've
got to learn to cook that indis
pensible dish, bean-hole beans.
It's as basic as bread and but
ter. Besides, it s a perfect out
door dish, and can be prepared
so far in advance that it can
save the evening for a weary,
rain-soaked pilgrim coming in
from a day's hunting or fishing.
And there should be leftovers
for days to come.
For turning them out, you'll
need a tin or aluminum camp
kettle with a cover that fits
down snug on the outside. The
last is essential.
Soak the beans overnight. Or,
to shorten the process, parboil
'em. To further the process, add
a teaspoon of baking soda to
break down their resistance.
Then parboil. Pour off this water
and add boiling water to cover
the beans to a quarter of an
inch. Sprinkle in some salt
not much. Add brown sugar (why
carry white sugar into the woods
at all, it isn't nearly as tasty)
about a cupful to every two
quarts of beans and water. If
you have lemons, de-seed and
add the squeezings of two. Cover
the beans with cross-strips or
slabs of dried salt pork.
Think that does it? Far from
it. Anyone with the name of
camp cook could have done as
much; what comes now calls for
the master's intuition, based
upon experience.
I trust you have a bull cook,
perhaps you know him by the
title of assistant. See that he has
prepared a pit, at least two feet
deep, and a blazing fire atop it.
A sandy lake beach or river
bar of course is by far the best
easiest to dig, cleanest, and
safest regarding fire hazard. He
should have piled . on all the
wood he could find hardwood
preferably. The big blaze will
not only heat the pit but also
the soil around it. And leave
you a good bed of coals.
Nestle Kettle Into Coals
Now, shovel out half the coals
and nestle your bean kettle pray
erfully and tenderly into the re
maining coals. Heap up the
sides of your kettle with coals,
and, if you have enough, over
the top. Then pile on the hottest
sand or earth until you have a
mound.
This done, go off blissfully on
your day's fishing, or hunting
carrying a light snack of dried
prunes and chocolate in the
bandana tied to your hip or
tucked down inside the back of
your shirt.

knowing how long to wait. If
too long, the kettle may be filled
with shriveled inedible beans;
if not cooked long enough, 'the
beans will be only partly done
but they can be salvaged by
finishing the job in a frying pan.
To help your intuition along,
know this: dry sand requires
the shortest time; loam the long
est. Wet sand, in between. But
the only way to learn that I
know of, is to try, and try again.
But it's worth a failure or two
in learning. Then, mastered,
you're is the Ph.D of C.C. (Doc
tor of Philasophy in Camp Cook
ing.) Done right, the beans will be
rich brown, each retaining its
shape but yet soft and tender,
with the pork cooked and its
fat sinking to cover all the beans.
And because they were cooked
in a bean-hole, nothing of the
flavor escapes as it does in oven
or frying pan.
Warming Up Improves
Don't worry ever about hav
ing too many. Each time they
are warmed up in a frying pan.
they improve. For the first meal,
I'd suggest add nothing: take 'em
straight to get the real unadult
erated taste of beans: next meal
or three removed, for variety,
add browned onions arid season
with soya sauce and catsup or
Worchestershire sauce alone. I'll
guarantee that will take, care
of all the leftover before you
turn your hand to a potfull of
hobo stew which we'll consider
at another time when you're
through drooling.
