    STENGEL JUGGLES LINE-UP
FOR WORLD SERIES BRUSH
By LEO H. PETERSEN
United Preu Sporti Editor
Brooklyn OJ.PJ Manager
Casey Stengel of the New York
Yankees, trying to even the
World Series against the Brook
lyn Dodgers at one game all,
changed his lineup today for the
second game, delayed 24 hours
by Thursday's rain.
Hoping to get more batting
power, he benched first baseman
Bill Skowron and third baseman
Andy Carey and put the left
handed hitting Joe Collins and
the veteran Gerry Coleman in
their places.
Stengel call on Don Larsen,
an 11-game winner who pitched
his best ball toward the close of
the season, to face Don New
combe, the Dodgers 27-game
winner.
It was a clear, sunny day, but
there was a strong chilly wind
blowing in from left field toward
home plate.
Adlai Attends
Adlal E. Stevenson, the Demo
cratic presidential candidate, en
tered Ebbets field and was es
corted to a box near the Dodger
dugout. Joining him in the box
were Gov. and Mrs. Averell
Harriman, Mayor and Mrs. Rob
ert Wagner and Walter O'Mal
ley, president of the Dodgers.
Managers Casey Stengel of the
Yankees and Walter Alston of
Brooklyn went over to meet Ste
venson and posed with him for
photographers.
First Stevenson posed with
Stengel's cap on, then with Al
ston's cap and finally wore both
caps.
Later he threw out the first
ball, as President Eisenhower did
for the opening series game here
Wednesday.
Newcombe, the major league's
top winning pitcher this year
with 27 victories, was out to
crack a personal Series jinx and
thus give the Dodgers a com
manding two-game lead in the
classic.
Larsen won only 11 games
but was the Yankees' best pitcher
In the last days of the regular
season.
Both hurlers were the. orig
inal pitching choices before rain
postponed the se c o n d game
Thursday.

The rainout was viewed as
favorable to the Dodgers, inas
much as it gave 39-year-old Sal

the oddsmakers still are sticking
with the Yankees. They've made
today's game a pick 'em affair
but made the Yankees 11-10
favorites to take the Series.
It was assumed that the extra
day of rest would help New

would be the case. Both pointed

Slaughter
May Receive
Full Share
Brooklyn U.K) Enos (Coun
try) Slaughter, already voted a
half-share by his Yankee team
mates, can make it a full one
with a "good series" and if he
does, he'll have Casey Stengel to
thank.
Generous as usual in their
splitting up of the World Series
melon, the Yankee players de
cided to give Slaughter half a
share even though he joined
them from Kansas City on Aug.
26 and appeared in only 23
games for the Yanks.
Stengel, long an admirer of
Slaughter's hustle and his 100
per cent effort for any club he
has played with, felt Enos de
served a full share and told the
players so. It was finally decid
ed to wait and see how the 40-
year-old ex-Cardinal performed
against the Dodgers in the series.
Unaware
Slaughter, unaware of Casey's
intercession for him because he
wasn't present when the shares
were being voted, got off to a
fine start against Brooklyn in
the opener Wednesday, rapping
out three hits even though the
Yankees lost.
In order to change their origi
nal vote and award Slaughter a
full share, the Yankees would
have to call another meeting
among themselves following the
series. Although the procedure
would be unusual, there is no
sule forbidding it.
Sidelights
On Series
RUNS IN RAIN
Brooklyn U.R) The only
ballplayers who set a foot on the
diamond in Ebbetts field Thurs
day was Dodger pitcher Don
Newcombe, who donned his uni
form and ran around the field
in the rain for about 15 minutes.
"He always wants to run," com
mented Manager Walt Alston.
FURILLO USES HEAT PAD
Brooklyn (U.R) Dodger out
fielder Carl Furillo spent Thurs
day's "day off" from the World
Series with a heating pad on his
back. Furillo complained of a
stiff muscle in his right side
"like something that won't
stretch when it's supposed to."
MAGLIE ON SUNDAY
Brooklyn U.R) Dodger
Manager Walter Alston still is
planning on starting Sal Maglie
in Sunday's game in the World
Series "if he's ready" only now
it will be the fourth game of the
series instead of the fifth. That
means Sal could be ready for a
possible seventh game with two
days rest.
FEWER PHONE CALLS
Brooklyn U.R) The New
York Telephone company today
reported that phone calls from
folks wanting to know the World
Series score are slightly less in
number than last year.
The company has a special
number you can call for the cor
rect time and added on three
times a minute the operator also
gives the score of the game. For
this year's opening game, 154,
803 calls were made compared
to 184,564 for opening game last
year and the all-time record of
247,129 in one day during the
1951 series.
SCUDERA OUT
Washington (U.R) Halfback
Joe Scudero, of the Washington
Redskins, one of the fastest
safety men in the National Foot
