Aunt With Axe To
Avoid Explanation

der 12-year-old schoolgirl hacked
her aunt to death with an axe
and two kitchen knives Thurs
day rather than explain how she
lost her S5 weekly allowance
but she couldn't go through with
plans to ambush her uncle.
Police said the girl. Patricia
Corcoran, of Mitchell, S. D.,
came to live with her relatives.

Patricia told authorities she
attended seventh grade at Bret
Harte Junior High school Thurs
day and went to catechism
classe,- at St. Jarlath's Roman
Catholic church. She then went
home, took a short-handle axe
and sat on it on the living room
couch waiting for her aunt to
return from work.
Mrs. Bunce. 55. arrived home
from her clerk's job at the Oak
land Naval Supply Center and
exchanged "Hi" greetings with
Patricia. She then asked the girl
what she did with the $5 week
ly allowance her uncle gave her
A few minutes later the aunt
walked into the living room and
the girl swung the axe, hitting
Mr;. Bunce on the left side of
the head.
'Didn't Say a Word'
"Auntie didn't say a word
after the first time I hit her,"
police quoted the girl as saying
bne then stabbed the woman
with a butcher knife "until it
bent." and then again with a
bread knife.
The girl said she then stood
on a washing machine near the
door waiting to ambush her
uncle. When the 54-year-old' ma
chinist arrived home from work
he was unable to go through
with the act She dropped the
axe and led him to his wife's
slashed body.
Ike Plans Extra .
Day In Seattle
Washington (U.R; President
Eisenhower will extend his west
ern campaign trip this month
an extra day in Seattle, Wash.
However, no new stops were
planned.
The White House announced
the expanded trip Thursday just
after Vice President Richard M.
Nixon reported to the Chief
Executive on his own 16-day
campaign trip through 32 states.
One of Nixon's recommendations
was reported to be that Mr. Eis
enhower visit more states where
key GOP candidates are running.

James C. Hagerty said Mr. Eisen
hower is considering some ex
pansion of his one-day trip to
Pittsburgh next Tuesday v Hager
ty hinted that the President's
activities would include more
than his television address.
However. Hagerty would not
give other details except to say
tha,t Mr. Eisenhower would not
visit another city or deliver an
other formal speech. He said it
will remain a one-day trip, as
originally planned.
On his western swing, Mr. Eis
enhower originally planned to
fly to St. Paul and Minneapolis.

schedule for the extra day has
been left open so far.

10 Persons Killed In Auto Collision

ously injured late Thursday
night when two automobiles col
lided head-on On the Trans
Canada Highway 10 miles south
east of here.
It was the second case of 10
deaths from a single traffic acci
dent in as many days. About 24
hours earlier, 10 persons died in
a highway collision at Muncie,
Ind.
Royal Canadian Mounted Po
lice said there were six persons
in one car and only the driver
survived. All five in the other
car Were killed.
The cars were both 1955
models. One was registered in
Saskatchewan and the other in
Manitoba.
Four of the victims were chil
dren. A woman and the, four chil
dren were killed in a car bearing
Saskatchewan license plates. A
man driving the car was in seri
ous condition in a hospital at
Virden. Five men in the other
car. which was owned by Stand
ard Oil Company, were killed
instantly.
Police said all six persons in
the Saskatchewan car were
thrown clear of the wreckaee.

lieved to have come from Virden,
were thrown clear and the two
others were trapped in the vehicle.

members trapped inside in a
huge air bubble that kept them
alive for more than six hours.
A Norwegian rescue tug rush

torches to free the men was only
55 miles away when the fishing
vessel Cyranka disappeared be
neath the storm-whipped waves
The trapped men were kept
alive to the last minute by the
big bubble in the hull, witnesses
said. They were heard beating
frantically on the steel walls of
the ship as it sank.

the fall guy" in her husband's
embezzlement of more than one
million dollars in state funds.
The wife of the former Illinois
state auditor met in a three-hour
conference with investigators of
the Senate Banking and Cur
rency Committee looking into
Hodge's misuse of pubiic money.
Sentenced to Prison
Hodge resigned his post and
withdrew as the Republican can
didate for reelection. Later, he
was sentenced to 12 to 15 years
in prison.
Senate investigator Robert
Wallace summoned Mrs. Hodge
tor questioning following her
published statement that others
were involved in the embezzle
ment.
Mrs. Hodge told Wallace he
should ask "the other woman" in
her husband's life, Bonita Lillie,
for information about the case.

She denied knowledge of how
much money her husband made
off with from the state treasury
through fraudulent checks.
"They say it was Hi million
dollars. Why don't they prove
it?" she said. "I don't have the
money."
Earlier this week, she disclosed
she had hired Morris Shenker,
a St. Louis attorney, to make
an attempt to regain some of the
estate she and her husband turn
ed over to the state to make up
funds spent by Hodge.
Army Developing
Weapons To Reduce
Plane Dependence

veloping new atomic weapons
that are expected to reduce its
dependence on air force fighter
planes for battlefield support.
Among them is a relatively
light weight 175 mm cannon
which apparently can fire
atomic shel',". The new cannon
is a marked contrast to the cum
bersome 280 mm atomic cannon
of which the Army was so proud
only a few years ago.
Weapons Demonstrated
The 175 mm cannon was in
cluded in a group of weapons
demorytrated here Thursday for
about o.OOO members and guests
of the American Ordnance Asso
ciation. The weapons can fire
atomic explosives from a few
miles to almost 200 miles ahead
of troor,- at the battlefront.
The weapons are a vital factor
in current Pentagon discussions
about reducing the planned size
of the Air Force. Such manpower
cuts probably would fall heav
iest on the Tactical Air Com
mand, the Air Force and that
works closest with the Army.
Some exper,, believe that the
175 mm cannon would play a
powerful role in knocking out
battlefield targets now assigned
to much more expensive fighter
bombers. Missile Due Soon
At Thursday's demonstration,
the Army also announced that
it,; 60-foot Redstone missile "will
soon take its place" in the na
tion's arsenal.

Army ballistic missile agency,
claimed that the Redstone is
"completely immune to any
presently known types of counter-measures"
or defenses.
The Redstone can fire either
conventional or atomic war
heads and has a reported range
