735 Drivers Lose
Licenses in Month
Salem Oregon officials sus
pended licenses of 735 drivers
last month and tallied 10,787
convictions of drivers for violat
ing traffic laws.
A total of 222 suspensions
folio wed recommendations of
'judges after convicting drivers
of reckless driving, basic rule,
hit and run, failure to stop and
failure to yield right of way
charges.
Another 154 of the suspen
sions were handed out through
discretionary action of the
department of motor vehicles.
Of these 107 were based on a
driver's loo-frequent accident or
violation involvement.
Driving while intoxicated con
victions were responsible for
283 of the suspensions and 76
others were meted out to drivers
caught driving on an already
suspended or revoked license or
for auto theft.
The department noted that so
far this year only two months
have seen violation convictions
below the 10,000 mark.
468 Auto Accidents
In First Six Months
. A total of 468 motor vehicle
collisions injuring 74 persons
occurred in Medford during the
first six months of this year,
according to a summary of traffic
accidents In Medford from the
department of motor vehicles,
Salem.
None of the accidents Involved
fatal injuries, according to the
summary, compared to two fa
talities during the first six
months of 1955. Last year there
were 382 accidents in Medford
Injuring 75.
Of 823 drivers of vehicles in
volved in the 468 collisions, 70 of
them were between 15 and 17
years oia, i-w irom 10 to it, j
138 irom au to J, 130 irom in
to 49, and" of these 597 were
males and 202 were females.
The summary stated that 343
of the accidents occurred on dry
surface conditions, 95 on wet
surface conditions. 19 on snowy
or icy surface conditions and that
87 of the collisions occurred at
night and 367 during the day.
Police Report 673
Cases in September
A total of 673 major and minor
offenses were reported to the
Medford police department dur-;
ing September. Of these, 576 j
cases were '"closed." giving the :
department an 86 per cent
cleared record, according to the :
monthly report. j
Major offenses totalled 87 and i
only 27 were cleared. This in-1
eluded 62 cases of larceny and I
theft involving amounts under
$50, 17 of which were cleared.
Miscellaneous offenses num-,
bored 586 and 549 were cleared
for 94 per cent.
Last year during the same
month, the department had 534
offenses of all types reported and
closed 465 cases for a 87 per cent
record. Last September there
were only 55 major offenses re-'
ported as against 87 for this
September. j
Texas has the largest number
of counties of any of the states
with 254, followed by Georgia
with 157. Kentucky with 117, j
and Missouri with 115. j
