A CRICK IN THE BACK
Many persons ask me why
they have a crick in the back,
and what they can do about
U 1 it. Usually I

is due to a
smoulder i n g
tende n c y to
arthritis of the
spine. I know
that in my
lifetime I have
had hundreds
of such cricks,
sometimes quite painful. For
tunately, they were temporary,
and usually they soon went
away without an treatment. I
think they were all manisfesta
tions of my tendency to fibrosi
tis, which is a relative of arthri
tis. When a person has a paralyz
ing crick in the back, which
comes perhaps after trying to
lift a trunk in the attic, and
when then he can hardly
straighten up, and perhaps has
to remain in bed for a few
weeks, it may well be that one
of the discs that lie between the
vertebrae slipped back and
pressed on the nerves. In some
of these cases the man has to
be operated on and the disc re
moved before he can be well. In
some cases the disc slips back
into place and then the pain
goes.
On other cases it seems as if
some bit of bone had slipped out
of place in the spine, and then
manipulation may suddenly
Officials Urge
Polio Vaccine Use
Washington (U.R) Leaders
in the fight against polio today
strongly urged Salk shots for
young adults because the danger
of their getting the disease has
been increasing sharply in recent
years.
They also said injection would
be "good insurance" for older
men and women since polio is
no respecter of age even though
it strikes hardest among chil
dren. Officials of the Public Health
Service and National Foundation
for Infantile Paralysis made the
statements in an attempt to dis
pel a "widespread misconcep
tion" that adults are somehow
immune to polio and don't need
Salk shots.
The questions of injections for
adults has gone to the fore with
recent upsurge in vaccine pro
duction. In 24 states and prob
ably . in others which haven't
reported to Washington pri
orities already have been eased
to permit adult inoculations.
Dr. David E. Price, assistant
U. S. Surgeon General, told the
United Press, we are urging l
Salk injections for adults where- j
ever the vaccine is available."
He said young adults particularly ;
need protection.
Dr. Hart E. Van Riper, medi
cal director of the polio founda
tion, said "all women of child
bearing age" and men "at least
to the age of 35 and possibly
40," should get shots. j

Women who want a child or
more children ask me what the
gynecologist meant when, after
trying to inject some gas
through their uterus and out
through their tubes, he said that
these tubes were closed and ob
structed. What he meant was
that if no gas could get through
the tubes, then a little egg from
the ovaries could not go through
into the womb, and hence there
could be no chance of the
woman's having a child. Many
a woman then asks if a sur
geon could repair or open up
the tubes, and my answer is
"No." A surgeon could make
something that would look like
a tube, but it is not likely that
it would function delicately and
e.vi.'tly as a tube has to do if a
tiny ovum is to be carried
through it.
Many women who once have
had their tubes tied now want
to know if they could have them
untied, but surgeons tell me they
doubt if this can be done with
much hope of success.
