Plans for 'Town, Country'
Breakfast Are Announced
Plans for a "town and coun
try" breakfast, to be held Oct.
30 at the Phoenix Grange hall,
were told to the directors ot the
Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce yesterday. '

the chamber's committee on agri
culture, and Melvin J. Lattie.
master of the Phoenix Crange,
reported that the event will start
at 7:30 a m. that day. that both
rural and ciy dwellers will be
welcome, and that a Grange
cooked meal and entertainment
will be provided.
The event is the outgrowth of
the programs of both the Grange
as a whole and the chamber in
seeking greater understanding
between those who live in cities
and those who live on farms.
Lattie said that Herb Carlton,
master of the county-wide Po
mona Grange, has given his en
thusiastic endorsement to the
project, and that ladies of the
Grange are already making
plans for the meal. He said 75
or more members of the 18
Granges In the county are ex
pected to attend.
Pierce reported that short
talks on some of the chamber's
programs and projects will be
given. Including a discussion of
the chamber as a whole, by
President Otto Ewaldsen; work
on roads and highways, by Chet
Hubbard, former highway com
mittee chairman; tax and legis
lative studies, by Frank J. Van
Dyke, and Talent project prog
ress, by Dr. Elmo Stevenson,
Mariposa Begins
Oregon Sea Trials
Portland, Ore. OJ.R) The Mat
son Line's new liner Mariposa
began two days of sea trials off
the Oregon coast today prepara
. tory to entering service between
San Francisco and the South
Seas next month.
The 14,000-ton converted Mar
iner, equipped with the latest
navigational equipment, will go
through her paces off Astoria.
Among the equipment under
going tests will be the Sperry
gyrofins the stabilizers which
jut out from either side of the
hull below the water line and
are designed to give the ship
smoother sailing. The Mariposa
is the first U.S. flag ship to be
equipped with the fins.
After her christening here
Oct. 16, the Mariposa will sail
to San Francisco and then depart
on her maiden voyage Oct. 28
for Australia. She is scheduled
to arrive at Melbourne several
days before the Olympic Games
begin.
The Mariposa Is the first of
two liners being built for Mat
son's South Sea service. Her
sister ship, the Monterey.
scheduled to enter service in
January.

Stevenson To Attack Administration for Cost of Living Rise
St. Louis (U.R)-Adlai E. Ste
venson drew up an attack on
the Eisenhower administration
today for failing to halt the rise
in the cost of living.
Press Secretary Clayton
Fritchey said the Democratic
presidential nominee would deal
in some detail with the ' record"
level of living costs in a talk
scheduled today at Indianapolis.
Stevenson has touched on this
issue previously.
"They told you they were go
ing to stop inflation," he told a
crowd at Kansas City, Kan.,
Thursday. "You know what the
facts are. The cost-of-living is
higher today than it ever has
been."
On TV Tonight
From Indianapolis. Stevenson
was to fly to Milwaukee, Wis,
where he will deliver a nation
wide television speech tonight.
Stevenson conferred for 40
minutes late Thursday night by
telephone with his vice presi
dential running mate, Sen. Estes
Kefauver. who was acjoss the
Mississippi river in Belleville,

Fritchey said Stevenson
impressed by two items on Ke-
fauver's report on his travels.
"Kefauver reported he found
that people in southern Illinois
are very much aware of and
indignant about the scandals in
the Republican administration
in Illinois," Fritchey said.
Kefauver Impressed
"Kefauver also said he was
crease in Democratic sentiment
in Indiana," he said.
In Illinois, former Republican
state Auditor Orville E. Hodge
has been jailed for stealing more
than a million dollars from the
state treasury.
Stevenson got one of the best
receptions of his campaign here
on Thursday. Thousands lined
