Farallon Swim Fete
But Fails To Finish

22-year old San Francisco State
college co-ed oulswam six husky
male competitors Tuesday, but
failed in her attempt to be the
first person to swim the wave
chopped 26!i miles from the
Farallon Islands to the mainland.
However, the pretty blond,
Myra Thompson, said she want
ed to sign up "right now" for
another try next year.
Miss Thompson, who increas
ed her weight from 130 to 14S
pounds for the gruelling swim,
was pulled from the water about
11 miles short of the coast. She
had been in the frigid Pacific
water for nine hours and 36
minutes.
Competitors Humiliated
Despite her failure, blamed on
a still outgoing tide. Miss Thomp
son completely humiliated her
competitors, who included such
internationally-known marathon
tars as Jose Cortinas of Cuba,
conqueror of the 22-mile Cata
lina channel in southern Calif
ornia; Bert Capps, first man to
swim the full length of Lake Ta
hoe in the California Sierra, and
Paul Herron, former national dis
tance champion from Stanford
university.
Other unsuccessful starters in
cluded Kim Kimmel, 48-year old
Ross, Calif., housewife; Bona
parte Haumea of Porterville,
Calif.; Woody Greenwood, San
Francisco; and Don Sherwood,
San Francisco television enter
tainer. Valiant Try
Sherwood, clad in a frogman
suit and swim fins which made
him ineligible for the $1,000
prize offered, called it quits af
ter only 45 seconds in the frigid
water.
Capps. who was the favorite
to win the event, dropped out
from exhaustion and cold two
hours after the race began. Cor
tinas suffered cramps and was
taken from the water four hours
later in a semi-conscious condi
tion. Herron was 11 miles from his
goal and swimming strongly
when he was pulled aboard his
escort boat in agony. He had
previously been painfully stung
by a passing jellyfish.
When Herron was forced to
give up. Miss Thompson took
over the battle with the elements
alone and fought them for nearly
three hours before giving up.
Prise Money
She won a first prize of $500
put up by a San Francisco night
club. The sponsors put up $1,000
in all, with half going to the
winner and the balance to be
split between the next three

Damage Suit Seeks
$5,465; Resulted
From Auio Accident
An Ashland beauty operator.
Ethel V. Stinison. has filed a
suit totaling $5,465 in circuit
court against Henry Franz, driv
er of an auto with which Mrs
Stimson's car collided Nov. 9,
1955.
According to the complaint,
Mrs. Stimson was driving south
on Mountain ave., a through
street in Ashland, and Franz was
driving east on Iowa St., a one
way street for westbound traf
fic. Mrs. Stimson claims the cars i
collided at the intersection and
charges Franz with negligence
on six counts.
Counts Listed
She alleges he did not have
his vehicle under control, did
not have proper lookout, was
driving east on a street reserved
for westbound traffic, failed to
stop prior to entering the
through street and failed to
yield right of way.
The plaintiff claims the acci
dent resulted in damage to her
car and personal injuries de
scribed as "severe,, disabling,
painful and permanent." The
injuries, she states, resulted in
temporary total disability from
her occupational persuit, men
tal distress, hypertension and
nervous prostration.
She asks judgement of $5,000
general damages, $465 special
damages as well as court costs.
Representing the plaintiff is Sam
B. Davis, Ashland attorney.
Tillamook Burn Area
Entry Closure Lifted
Salem (U.P.) Entry by
permit closure was lifted from
the Tillamook burn area at mid
night Tuesday by proclamation
of Gov. Elmo Smith.
The lifting of this closure will
allow hunters, fisherman and
hikers to enter all forest areas
in the northwest Oregon district.
However, persons wishing to use
private lands should obtain the
landowners' permission.

tration of sweeping world prob
lems under the rug.
He said the government needs
"to put our finest minds and our
greatest effort to reach basic de
cisions for peace." "In Korea, in
Indochina, in many places, the
Eisenhower administration has
not solved crises it has swept
them under the rug," Kefauver
said in a speech prepared for
delivery before "the young
voters at the University of Lou
isville.
He said that "getting an hon
orable peace on which all can
rely is the paramount challenge
of our age." And he pledged that
Democratic presidential nominee
Adlai E. Stevenson and he "will
labor towards this end,' if elect
ed. "And I believe that we can
achieve that goal since once a
decision has been made for
peace, we will be halfway to our
goal," he added.
Kefauver aimed his campaign
appeal directly at his young
audience with a statement that
"the Democratic Party more
than its rival, has welcomed
young people."
He said that he didn't believe
that President Eisenhower has
"rewarded young people very
well" who had worked "with
deep ardor" for his election in
1952.

American Seamen
In Cairo To Train
As Canal Pilots

seamen arrived today to train
as Suez Canal pilots and help
Egypt keep traffic moving
through the vital waterway.
They said their motive was "en
tirely non-political."
The Americans, who respond
ed to a worldwide appeal from
the new Egyptian Canal Author
ity, are Walter Equils, 45, New
Kensington, Pa.; Elmo Holland,
43, Newport Beach, Calif.; Greg
ory Hatch, 48, San Jose. Calif.;
Alex Langtrey, 47, N. Y.; and
Nico Hagens, Freeport, Long
Island.
To Train With Soviets
The five will begin their train
ing Thursday alongside 15 So
viet mariners to help fill the gap
left by the mass resignation of at
least 180 Western pilots Sept.

Equils, a burly, greying sea-1
man, told reporters: We are
not taking sides we hope. I
hope before long there'll be a
lot more pilots."
Equils said they will undergo i
six weeks of probationary train
ing before deciding whether to
stay to guide ships through the
tricky canal. He said none of the
five has sighed contracts with
the Egyptian Canal Authority
yet.
"It all depends on how it
works out," he said.
The five said they are not
bringing their families to Egypt

stances." Electrical Explosion
Badly Burns Worker
Portland (U.R) One work
man was badly burned and pow
er service to scattered parts of
Portland was interrupted yes
terday afternoon by an elec
trical explosion in the Pacific
Power & Light company's Albina
substation.
Floyd F. Ensworth, 52, of
Park Place in Clackamas coun
ty, was in serious condition in
Emanuel hospital. He had just
entered the building when the
explosion occurred. Ensworth
apparently was thrown against
high-voltage equipment.
Ensworth was still conscious
when carried from the building
by other workmen. He said he
did not know what happened
and that he had not touched
anything.
Power interruptions, ranging
from a few minutes to 52 min
utes, were mainly in industrial
areas.
A PP&L spokesman said cause
of the blast was not determined
immediately.
