my business. My correspond
ents called artificial insemina
tion adultery, but the dictionary
defines that as "voluntary sex
ual intercourse between a mar
ried woman and any other than
the lawful spouse." Obviously,
when a physician, using a long
syringe, injects a few drops of
semen into a woman's vagina
there is no sexual act.
Strangely, when, a hundred
years ago, the world's first great
woman's surgeon J. Marion
Sims started trying to find
ways of curing sterility in mar
ried couples, the wrath that des
cended upon him was devastat
ing. Even physicians attacked
him and accused him of dese
crating the marriage bed. He
was so hurt that he largely quit
this work, and nothing more
was done about it until recent
years. Now the attacks are on
again. It is curious that people
have always been hostile to any
one who would try to place in a
loving woman's arms the baby
whom she so longs for.
Even adoption has long been
frowned upon by legal profes
sion and others, and the illegiti
mate child has always been
looked on as a sort of disrepu
table person who should never
have gotten mixed up in an un
savory mess!
Child Could Lose Out
I was surprised to read the
other day in the book by Mr.
and Mrs. Brooks "Adventuring
in Adoption" that in England
adoption was not legalized until
1926. And this did not mean
that the adopted child could in
herit the property of his foster
parents. Even when they willed
it to him, he could easily lose
out in the courts because the
laws on the subject are any
thing but clear.
The Brooks' say that In this
country the laws on adoption
are so mixed-up in the several
states that when a will contest
comes before a judge the poor
man has "to flounder in an al
most uncharted sea."
Adoption of children into
homes, instead of incarceration
in drab, often cruelly run orphan
asylums, became fairly common
some 60 years ago when I was
a boy. I remember then reading
of a wealthy man In England
who placed hundreds of orphans
in homes of good people in South
Africa and elsewhere.
In America great credit must
go to Theodore Roosevelt who.
in 1909. called the first white
House Conference on homeless
children, out of which came the
"Children's Bureau." This was
the first public agency- in the
world to look after the welfare
of homeless children. Since our
courts have been so very slow
to safeguard the rights of or
phaned and adopted children.
I suppose it will be 100 years
now before the law will grant
any rights to the child conceived
after some artificial form of
insemination. Why should we
always be so heartless and so
cruel to the child who, through
no fault of his own. comes into
the world in some way not hal
lowed by tradition.
Bell's Palsy
Many persons ask what to do
for a Bell's Palsy of half of the
face. They might consult a neu
rologist, but I doubt if the neu
rologist could do much for them
that- their family doctor at home
could not do, which is usually
nothing. In most cases one waits
until the nerve recovers its
strength or grows out again.
There is no medicine that I know
of that can be taken by mouth
to hurry the process. I imagine
it would help if a physiother
apist would massage the muscles
of the face, or stimulate them
electrically. Fortunately, in all
but few cases, after some
months the power of the muscles
comes back. I do not know what
the cause is I imagine it usually
is a virus that causes inflamma
tional in the facial nerve.
Popping In the Ears
Many ask what is wrong when
the ears pop. Sometimes it hap
pens when a person is on a train
which is rapidly going down a
mountain-side. Then it is due to
increasing pressure of the air on
the eardrums. In order to equal
ize the pressure on the two sides
of the drum, all a person has to
do is to swallow several times;
then air goes up through the so
called eustachian tube from the
throat into the middle ear.
Sometimes when a person has
a cold and the mouths of the
eustachian tubes in the throat
are somewhat swollen, there may
be difficulty in the passing of
air up into the middle ears, and
then there may be some popping
of the ears. There is no need for
worrying about the condition be
cause it is usually transient. It is
not indicative of any serious dis
ease of the ear.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
wiil understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer re
quests for information or to at
tempt to diagnose by mail.
