Gtorg I love my wife very
much, but I can't keep on living
the kind of life to which her
family hat sentenced me.
I am a city boy, and I never
dreamed of being anything else.
When I courted my wife, she too
lived in the city, and it never oc
curred to me that there would
be any problem about where to
make our home.
When we informed her par
ents that we wanted to marry,
they hit the roof. But a few days
later, their whole attitude
changed. They apologized for ob
jecting, said that it was entirely
their daughter's choice, that they
had confidence in her judgment
and would back her and me to
the limit. As a token of then
new attitude, they insisted on
making the down payment on a
house for us in a suburb as a
wedding gift.
1 was so anxious to have their
approval that I never stopped to
think of the implications, and
thanked them profusely. Later I
found that they had picked a
suburb to which thehy had al
ready decided to move. Now I
commute two hours a day, never
see my friends, and have no
social life or recreation. My wife.,
doesn't like it much better than
I do, but she argues that we will
get used to it.
Bella My parents took my
marriage very hard. They lost
my older sister through an ac
cident just before she was to be
married, and they were shocked
and hurt tht I chose a boy who
comes from a poor family and
has had few opportunities.
My parents have certainly
made an effort to accept and
understand the situation, and I
cannot bring myself to hurt
them, even though I too would
rather continue living in the
city, where we have friends and
more interests. Some children
assume heavy burdens for their
parents, and all we have to do is
to let them help us and spoil us
in order to make them happy.
The Council: Belle is wrong in
likening this situation to the case
of children assisting needy par
ents. Where the parents need
money or physical attention
because of illness, the children
should do their duty cheerfully.
This is another matter, however.
The parents are imposing their
preference for suburban life on
two young people who have both
been raised in -the city. That is
not fair.
George and Belle are both at
fault for having failed to explain
their feelings to the parents. In
stead of resenting the parents.
George should confess to them
that he was at fault when he ac
cepted their generous gift. When
they understand how he subordi
nated his feelings on this sub
ject to his eagerness for their ap
proval of the marriage, they may
change their attitude.
If the parents cannot bear to
live too far a distance from their
daughter, it is for them to change
their residence. Young people
should be free after marriage to
choose their own community.
Belle and George owe her par
ents a complete explanation, but
they will build only antagonism
and unhappiness by continuing
in a community that is not con
genial to them.

' It's a strange world. Take fish.
The piranha of South America
despite its small size 11 inches
at most has quite likely taken
more human lives than any other
fish, and that includes the dead
liest sharks. The little piranha's
jaw muscles are so strong that
it can snap ordinary fishhooks
in two and it can sever a fin
ger with grisly ease. A school of
these vicious fish has stripped
the flesh off a 400-pound hog
within ten minutes.
Sharks and their close rela
tives, the skates, rays and
chimras, are boneless they have
gristle instead of true bone in
their skeletons.
The African lungfish has ex
isted in a block of hardened
mud for more than four years
in a state of suspended anima
tion and when returned to the
water, resumed its unusual life.
Normally, it must come to the
surface periodically or drown.
The North American paddle
fish, except for a part of its
tail, has no scales.
Despite their large well-developed
gills, tarpon die if denied
access to the surface even though
kept in pure, rapidly-flowing sea
water. This accounts perhaps
for the tarpon's characteristic
"rolling" each time it comes
up, it gulps in air which it stores
in its air bladder.
