Newberg Residents
To Vole on Liquor
Newberg ((J.R) This tradi
tionally "dry" town may damp
en up a bit if voters in the No
vember general election choose
to change the present order of
things.
A petition has placed a meas
ure on the ballot giving voters
an opportunity to decide on the
sale of alcoholic liquors, now
prohibited under local option.
All names on the petitions
have been checked by Yamhill
County Clerk Jack Beeler,- who
validated 246 of them. 11 more
than the minimum required by
law.
Tlie petitions asked an elec
tion to determine whether the
sale of (a) all alcoholic liquors
or (b) alcoholic liquors contain
ing over 14 per cent alcohol by
volume or (c) alcoholic liquor
containing over 4 per cent of
alcohol by weight shall be pro
hibited. With the exception of two
years, 1934 to 1936, Newberg
has been a "dry" town since
its founding. During those two
years beer was sold here under
provisions of the Knox Law.
Champion Cowboy
Named af Pendleton
Pendleton (U.R) The
Pendleton Round-Up, one of the
biggest western shows of its kind
in the country, wound up four
days of colorful action Saturday
with John Dalton of Sturgis, S.
D., being named top cowboy of
the round-up.
Dalton was presented the tro
phy by William W. Knight, pub
lisher of the Oregon Journal. In
addition, the tall cowboy re
ceived S2700 he had won in four
days work here, picking up priz
es on each day's events and the
finals.
Pendleton round-up winner of
the American beauty contest was
Gladys So-Happy of Yakima. All
contestants were American In
dian girls.
Perfect weather conditions
held for the final day of the
western show. Some 12.000 spec
tators, the largest crowd of the
four day show, turned out Sat
urday to watch the action-packed
event.
Ferris Wheel Fall
Kills Young Woman
Long Beach. Calif. (U.R)
An 18-year-old housewife died
of injuries shortly after she and
her husband fell Sunday night
from a giant ferris wheel at the
Long Beach Pike Fun Zone.
The victim was identified as
Mrs. Nancy Goetzelman, of Los
Angeles. Her husband, Elmer,
25, was described as in critical
condition at Seaside Community
hospital.
The Goetzelmans apparently
fell from the chair in which
they were ascending on the
double-wheel type fun ride
about 35 feet from the pave
ment. Seconds before the acci
dent, the operator of the ferris
wheel noticed the couple was
dangerously rocking the chair.
