adopted a resolution requiring
air travelers to pay for tickets
in advance, according to infor
mation received by the Med
ford Western Union office to
day. This resolution will be ob
served bv all domestic air lines
in the United States, effective

county savings bond sales chair
man, indicated that sales of
United States treasury E and H
savings bonds in Jackson county
amounted to $828,758 in Aug
ust. The report was issued by
George M. Mimnaugh. state
director of bond sales. The total
for August. 1955. was S801.942.
Mimnaugh said Orcgonians set
a peace-time record for them
selves in their E and H bond
purchases last month. They
bought a total of S4. 189.409.70
worth of these securities, the
highest Aucust figure since the
1945 war days.
Eleven counties in Oregon are
now ahead of last year's sales.
They are Jackson. Coos. Curry,
Jefferson. Linn. Malheur. Til
lamook. Umatilla. Washington,
Wheeler and Yamhill.

DRUGS DANGEROUS?
People keep asking me if
there is any danger in the un
limited and continued use of the
new, so-called
"wonder
drugs" which
have a calm
ing effect, and
oft e n t i m e s
help the per
son with a
mental dis
turbance. The
answer is that
these drugs.
whicn so often do great good,
can all do harm if taken by
someone who is highly sensitive
to them, or who takes them for
too long a time or in too large
doses. Hence, their administra
tion should be supervised by a
physician. What is important is
that all patients know enough to
quit taking the drug and to con
sult their physician the day
queer or distressing symptoms
appear.
For instance; when taking
chlorpromazaine. if the person's
eyes begin to look yellow, he
should stop taking the drug and
should immediately see his phy
sician. With a snake-root or
Rauwolfia type of drug the pa
tient should stop taking the
medicine if he should get men
tally disturbed, or if he should
begin to feel stiff in his muscles
and to lose expression in his
face. Persons taking the Mil
town type of drug should know
that they should not run up the
dose foolishly, because cases of
habituation have been reported.

large bowel, shows the presence
of polyps. These are little tum
ors often as big as the end of a
finger. They look much like a
blackish mushroom with a top
and a stem. Most of them are
potentially malignant, which
means that eventually cancer
might arise in them. Fortunately,
it arises in the top and not
around the stem of the polyp.
This peculiarity is reassuring
when, for one reason or another,
it is inadvisable to operate im
mediately. It means that there is
time in which an x-ray man can
watch the polyp to see if it is
going to grow.
We physicians believe that
many of the cancers of the colon
start in a polyp. For years it
will produce no symptoms. Oft
en one or more are discovered
accidentally when the large
bowell happens to be x-rayed. I
have reason to believe that
usually these little lumps grow
very slowly, and I suspect that
in many cases they never become
cancerous, and the person lives
to die of something else. I know
this because I have been so
many polyps found at autopsy on
persons who died of something
or other. I was much interested
once on seeing a big polyp in the
Mid-September is an excellent

Two things which are very im
portant in planting a lawn are
proper preparation of the seed
bed and the selection of proper

then seed, before the soil has had
ample opportunity to settle. This
will invariably result in an un
even lawn.
Selection Problem :
After a good, level well com
pacted seed bed has been de
veloped and you are ready to
seed, then the seed selection
problem appears. Red creeping
fescue and Kentucky btuegrass
are two of our better lawn seeds.
Bentgrasses which are so satis
factory along the coast and in
the more humid Willamette val
ley are very disappointing in this
area unless they are given the
very best of care as regards ferti
lizer and moisture they "will turn
brown in hot weather.
With most people this care is
so exacting that the lawns turn
brown in spite of them. As a re
sult, bentgrasses should be avoid
ed even in small quantities in
lawn mixtures. Merion bluegrass
is a new type of grass which ;
makes a good tight turf but !
grows much more slowly and as
a result does not need as frequent
mowing.
Rate Listed
Any of these grasses can be
planted at the rate of one pound
to 250 square feet. Some people
prefer clover in their lawns in
which case a quarter of a pound
of white Dutch clover could also
be used with the grass. Clover
has the advantage of requiring
less water andfertilizer but as
the leaves bruise easily, they
stain clothing rather readily.
While now is an ideal time for
lawn seeding, they can continue
to be seeded up until early Octo
ber with good success.

proctologist. Working through
an electrically-lighted tube he
can dessicate or burn up the
polyps with the help of very hot
electric sparks.
Certainly, polyps, when dis
covered, should not be forgot
ten and neglected. They should
be watched, and if they show
signs of growing they should be
be removed. When the patient
is old or feeble or in poor shape
for an operation, his physician
will be justified in postponed
surgical intervention.
