Subcommittee Says Witnesses
Favor Ending Atomic Bomb Tests

ate subcommittee on disarma
ment reported Saturday that 75
witnesses who appeared at its
hearinss favored ending atomic
and hydrogen bomb tests through
International agreement.
The non-Rovernment witnesses
also agreed generally that "all
weapons of mass destruction
should be eliminated and pro
hibited." They also would extend
the international ban on weap
ons to testing of inter-continental
ballistic missiles and develop
ment of new "surprise" weapons.
The witnesses, many of whom
represented private organiza
tions, testified here and at Cam
bridge. Mass.. and Minneapolis,
Minn.. lat April and June.
Oroanitations Listed
The organizations included the
Federation of American Scien
tists, the National Council of
Churches of Christ, Amvet. the
American Veterans Committee,
United World Federalists, the
Board of World Peace of the
Methodist Church, the Coopera
tive League of the United States,
the Women's International
League for Peace and Freedom
and the National Farmers Union.
The subcommittee r e p o r t ed
their stand in an Interim report.
President Kisenhower has held

testing atomic and hydrogen
weapons in the absence of some
general agreement on disarma
ment. And Republican leaders
have attacked Democratic Presi
dential Candidate Adlai E. Stev
enson for proposing that this gov
ernment give consideration to
halting such tests.
The witnesses endorsed Mr.
Eisenhower's plan for mutual
aerial inspection to prevent a
surprise attack and recommend
ed tiiat it be carried out by the
Lmted nations. I hey agreed
with administration witnesses
that stockpile nuclear weapons
cannot be detected by any inspec
tion system now known.
The subcommittee, headed by
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey ID
Minn.) said developments in
mass-destruction weapons have
both hindered and helped dis
armament methods.
Secretly Prepare
"At best, nations would be far
less able to devise agreements to
Insure that a nation was in fact
living up to its disarmament com
mitments and not Instead secret
ly preparing for war," the report
said.
But. it added, 'These develop
ments probably account for the
increased efforts for disarma
ment in 1955." The year 1955
was called ''an important mile
stone in disarmament efforts be

Hotel is Searched
For Lobby Bomb
New York UP) The busy
main lobby and Peacock Alley
bar at the swank Waldorf-Astoria
hotel were cleared for more than
two hours Saturday while police
searched for a bomb that an an
onymous telephone caller said
would explode before 5:30 p.m.
Police ended their search at
5:45 p.m. without finding a trace
of a bomb and the hotel's activ
ity returned to normal.
The caller telephoned at 3:20
p.m. that a bomb would go off in
the lobby by 5:20 p m.
Police cleared more than 200
persons from the lobby and bar
and a makeshift registration
desk was set up at the Waldorf
drugstore on the street-level
floor, below the lobby.
Police Search
While guests registered in the
drugstore, police searched couch
es, chairs, offices, cigaret and
news stands and other facilities
on the huge lobby floor of the
hotel, which covers an entire city
block.
Robert Stone, assistant mana
ger of the hotel, said a man tele
phoned at 3:20 p.m. EDT. with
the latest in a long series of
bomb threats that have harassed
New York police.
"I have a big surprise for you."
he said. "It Is to go off in two
hours. Some people .will get
hurt."
Police immediately were sum
moned. Patrolmen were sta
tioned at all entrances to the
lobby and stairways from the
street level up one flight to the
lobby were closed off.
The Waldorf, scene of several
small fires a few weeks ago. is
the home, of some of the nation's
most prominent citizens. Among
those living in the Waldorf Tow
ers are former President Herbert
Hoover. Gen. Douglas MacAr
thur. Composer Cole Porter and
Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge.

papers concerning a mysteri
ous red "fireball" sighted over
Portland for about IS minutes
Friday night.
Experts today ascribed the
phenomenon to a combination
of smoke in Portland and the
iiiting , planet Mars. The
planet came within 35 million
miles of the earth this week,
the closest since 1924.
The red ball was described
by some residents as high in
the southern sky, while oth
ers said it was only a few
miles up and small.
Smoke from the city com
bined with brief atmospheric
conditions to create the illu
sion that Mars was a nearby
fireball, according to observ
ers at the Portland airport

Hemingways Face
Newsmen in France

American author Ernest Heming
way came to France Saturday
to "get away from the crowds."
But he and his wife promptly
ran into a crowd of newsmen.
The Hemingways arrived here
aboard the liner He De France
for a visit to France and Italy.
Hemingway told reporters that
he and Mrs. Hemingway had no
particular plans except to travel
and visit with old friends, includ
ing Pablo Picasso.
The white-bearded author said
he would first visit Mont Saint
Michel "for at least a day," then
go on to Paris Sunday.

Boys Lead Police
On River Chase
Kingston, N.Y.. (U.B Three
land-weary but adventurous boys
led police on a hair-raising chase
down the Hudson river Saturday
in stolen high powered motor
boats.
Police chased the boys, aged
12 to 16. in six commandeered
boats, but it took them three
hours to run down the trio, who
stole a total of three boats be
fore they were caught.
The weekend calm of the Hud
son river valley was broken
when the three roared off in two
motor boats about 1 p.m. Police
took off in pursuit in command
eered craft. Other police station
ed along the shore as lookouts
blew whistles as the boys whiz
zed past.
One boat was halted some 70
miles down river from Kingston,
at Piermont, N.Y. The other turn
ed around and headed back north
from Piermont. Somewhere
along the line, it was traded
for another boat, which roared
north before it, too was stopped.

Two Hurt at Paper
Strike at Chester
Chester Pa., (U.R) A pretty
blonde photograhper and a
young printer were injured Sat
urday in skirmishes as the Amer
ican Newspaper Guild began a
strike against the Chester Times
newspaper.
A $2,500 motion picture cam
era was destroyed in another of
the altercations which took place
while more than 50 pickets pa
raded around the newspaper
plant during the first few hours
of the strike.
Later, however, the guild and
management reached an agree
ment to end mass picketing and
scheduled a return to negotia
tions Sunday morning on a con
tract dispute over job security.

Pa., a 25-year-old blonde photog
rapher who was selected "Page

the Agriculture Department to
give some relief to Oregon Pota

fauver's first campaign invasion
of Virginia a traditionally Dem
ocratic state that went for Pres
ident Eisenhower in 1952.
Kefauver said the Republi
cans haven't had "the nerve" to
risk the WTath of millions of
farmers" by making a direct at
tack on the REA system. But he
said they have "launched an in
siduous flanking attack" on pow
er co-ops.

"They have sought to cut off
the very life blood of the sys
tems their sources of abun
dant, low-cost power," he said.
"In this last Congress it was

Two nf the 14 arrested were

gambling game. The others were
booked for frequenting the establishment.
