Second Kibble
The Stumbo brothers of Wolf
Creek appear to have a second
"nibble" for their 16 by 100
foot stretch of property cross
ing U. S. Highway 99 north of
Glendale in Douglas county.
A letter has been received
from an "interested party" sta
tioned with the Armed Forces
in Tokyo, Japan, by Leslie I.
Kellow Real Estate company in
Medford. The Stumbos listed the
property "for sale" with Kel
low's company last week.
From Medford
. Kellow informed ' the Mail
Tribune today the letter was
from a long-time persona!
friend, C. H. Ernst, who read a
news story about the property
and antics of the Stumbos in
the Pacific Stars and Stripes,
newspaper published for service
men. In the letter, Ermt said. ' I'm
writing to inquire the price on
the home site with 'highway
frontage' and backage you have
advertised in the Stars and
Stripes . . ."

also "investigating'' the prop
erty. The three Stumbo brothers.
Robert, Allan and Harry, and a
cousin, Clair Stumbo, recently
discovered the state failed to
make settlement for the prop-1
erty before construction of the !
highway began in 1947.
The state highway department
has offered them $100 plus 6 per
cent interest since 1946. The
state has also indicated condem
nation procedures may be start
ed if clear title to the property
can not be otherwise obtained.

Preparing main dishes such as
beef pie. chicken-corn casserole
and the like for storage in the
home freezer can be a real time
saver and convenience provided
the homemaker looks out for a
few "do's' and don'ts" for suc
cess in this modern way of stor
ing food.
Food specialists in the U. S.
Dcpartment of Agriculture's Re
search Service recently made up
a number of main dishes experi
mentally and judged the food
for eating quality after different
periods of time in frozen stor
age. Here are special pointers
' based on their conclusions.
Do leave -egetables and mac-
' aroni dishes slightly underdone
for freezing. If cooked well-done
1'. 2 cup lemon juice, 1 teaspoon
salt, ' teaspoon cayenne, '4
teaspoon ginger, li teaspoon
each of whole cloves, allspice
(whole spices in dampened
cheesecloth bag). Stir in 4 cups
beet or cane sugar, mixing
thoroughly; bring to boil and
cook on medium heat about 20
minutes or-until thickened, stir
ring often. Pour into hot stcr
lizcd jars: seal at once.

have purchased Lipman Wolfe
and Co., one of Portland's larg
est department stores, and its
new store in downtown Salem.
Roberts will be chairman of
the board and Wendell presi
dent, putting Lipmans under a
local corporation and ending
Lipmans status as part of a
large department store chain.
It was controlled since 1925
by National Department Stores,
a New York corporation with a
16-store chain acquired in 1955
by South American Gold and
Platinum Corp.
Though no price was an
nounced, retail sources placed a
value of S4 to S5 million on the
combined Lipman operations.
Roberts also is president and
a director of the family-owned
Roberts Brothers Corp., which
has a large downtown Portland
store and branches in Salem.

Grandma's Pet Pearalilli
Putting up some of those
plentiful pears? Here's a fine
easy recipe with old-fashioned
flavor. Makes about 4 pints of
zesty relish for serving with hot
or cold meats. Recipe has been
carefully worked out so that
the measured amount of beet or
cane sugar used gives just-right
sweetness.
Takes about 5 pounds (15
large) firm ripe pears. Put un
peeled, cored pears through
coarse knife of foodgrinder.
Measure 7' 2 cups. Grind 1 medium-size
green pepper and two
canned pimientos fine.
In preserving kettle combine
pears, pepper, pimientos. IVi
cups gold seedless raisins, one
tablespoon grated lemon rind.

tomatoes after the salad has

Lettuce should be trimmed as

soak lettuce. Simply rinse under
