13 So. Central
server. The only reason husbands
in other countries don't know
what they're missing, apparently,
is that the world has the wrong
impression of American women.
"The American woman pic
tured in Hollywood movies is not
found outside Hollywood and the
larze cities." Oscar Yanes wrote
in an article titled "For Married
Men And Bachelors" in a Vene
zuelan newspaper. Yanes was a
member of a group of Latin
American journalists brought
here this year by the Department
of State.
Millions of people talk about
them who know them only by
report," he pointed out. The
truth, as Yanes saw it, was far
more flattering than the rumors.
I "The most amazing thing about
the American woman is her ca
pacity for work," he told the
South American men. "After
eight hours a day In an office or
shop, she has time to keep her
house clean and neat and go out
with her husband in the evening.
How does she do it? She never
takes a siesta."
Besides not sleeping on the
job. women here make much less
nf their chance for independence
than the world realizes, Yanes
observed.
"When a Latin American wish
es to praise his fiance for being
obedient and docile, he tells her
she is not like American wom
en." he wrote. He found the im
plied criticism in this custom to
be quite undeserved.
"The American home func
tions smoothly, because it Is so
well organize d," Yanes ex
plained. "It is not a place where
the man makes the decisions.
Both husband and wife make the
decisions. It is a democratic or
ganization where both are perm
anent members of the governing
body.
"If this system were applied
In Latin America or many other
places In the world, the woman
would take advantage of her
freedom. However, with few ex
ceptions, this Is not true in the
United States."
An American wife also takes
great pride in her appearance.
Yanes concluded. "Regardless of
her age," he wrote, "she wants to
be attractive to her husband.
Girls looking for husbands

Food Specialist
Gives Tips on
Sandwich Bread
If you're searching for sand
wich specials that will keep
back-to -schoolers well-fed, the
key may be in the bread you !
use. i
Days of sad-sack lunches can
be gone forever, if you try as
sortment of breads now offered
in local stores, says Dorothy
Sherrill, Oregon State college
food marketing specialist.
Today's markets are stocked
with baked, partially baked,
frozen and canned breads, that
have special keeping qualities.
Dark and white bread counters
are filled with an endless line
up of different kinds of rolls and
breads that can help the lunch
packer avoid sandwich-making
monontony.
When buying bread, don't
squeeze it to see if it's fresh,
advises Miss Sherrill. Pinching
the package doesn't indicate
whether it's fresh or stale. Some
breads are naturally more com
pact while others are light
weight and fluffy. With modern
packaging and marketing meth
ods, grocers can usually ensure
buying is fresh.
When planning sandwich fil
lings the OSC specialist recom
mends selection of foods that
are in ample supply at relative
ly low prices in local stores.
Included in her list are: fore
quarter cuts of beef, cheese, but
ter, stewing chickens, turkey,
canned tuna and peanut butter.
Some fillings can be prepared
beforehand. Pot roast an arm or
blade beef roast, chill and slice.
Stew hen, remove meat from
bones and refrigerate. Carrots,
celery sticks, radishes and cau
liflowerettes can be cleaned and
cooled for relish tuck-ins.
These combinations of plenti
ful foods and different kinds of
bread are suggested by Miss
Sherrill and Agnes Kolshorn,
OSC extension nutritionist:
Pumperknickel and Swiss
cheese Boston brown with bacon
bits and cold beans; rye and
cream cheese with chive; Vienna
and bologna; French bread and
sliced cold lamb; and salt-rising
bread with lemon butter and
zucchini slices.

Why, indeed? What are the
causes of divorce?
Here at the American In

thousands of broken marriages
have been salvaged from the
reefs of conflict and despair be
fore they reach the divorce
court. All. at their first con

play one element in common:
lack of cooperative sympathy
and understanding. Through
months or years of gradual mis
understanding and tension, they
have lost the one-ness which is
necessary both to create and
sustain a successful marriage.
Into their unity have come prob

without the insight which is part
of sympathy; problems of in
laws, finances, religion, children
varietism, infidelity.
A general survey of the prob

causes for divorce throughout
the nation: lack of common in

engagement period, and money
difficulties. Marriage counselors
familiar with the difference
between real and rationalized
causes might rank these statist

public seems to feel that the
business of the divorce court
springs from these sources: Lack

Divorce has Indeed many
