    Ruling May Decide
Fate of Integration
At Tennessee School
Clinton, Tenn. (U.R) Authori
ties believed today a ruling on
a contempt charge against a
segregationist leader may decide
the fate of an attempt to inte
grate the Clinton High school.
While police for a fifth day
escorted 12 newly admitted Ne
groes to and from classes U.S.
District Judge Robert L. Taylor
prepared to rule whether Fred
erick John Kasper, of Washing
ton, D.C., violated an injunction
against nti-Ncgro demonstra

New York Mayor
To Run for Senate
New York (U.R) Demo
cratic leaders had high hopes
today that Mayor Robert Wag
ner's decision to run for the
Senate would carry the state and
iwing New York to Adlai E.
Stevenson in the coming elec
tion. Wagner, 46, announced Thurs
day that he was willing to run
for the post vacated by Sen.
Herbert H. Lehman after he had
consulted with family, advisers
and friends,
News of his candidacy was
warmly received by Stevenson,
Gov. Averell Harriman and
party leaders Carmine De Sapio
and Michael Prcndergast.
Stevenson, in Knoxville, Tenn.,
when he received word of the
announcement, said Wagner
stcod at the very top among the
younger leaders of the party.
"In my opinion," Stevenson
said, "if nominated he would
add great strength to our ticket
In New York state."
Harriman said that Wagner
"will bring to the campaign that
vigorous fighting spirit for lib
eral objectives which are so im
portant for the success of both
our national and state tickets in
November."
De Sapio and Prendergast both
predicted Wagner would win the
Senate election.
These voices of approval virtu
ally assured Wagner of getting
the nomination at the party's
state convention in Albany Sept.

I school term at Mansfield, Tex.,
where a half-dozen officers with
submachineguns stood guard
over an angry crowd of whites
Thursday.
Six Negroes armed with a fed
eral court order for their admis
sion to the Mansfield High
school were expected to try to
day, if they try at all, to register
along with some 145 white stu
dents who registered Thursday.
For two successive nights Ne
groes were hanged in effigy in
Mansfield and once in Fort
Worth 12 miles away where the
Negroes have previously attend
ed segregated schools. Automo
biles parked around the Mans
field school bore signs saying,
"We don't want Negroes," and
"Negroes be damned."
Presence Starts Trouble
Clinton authorities saw no
sign of trouble until Kasper ar
rived last Sunday, representing
the Seaboard White Citizens
Council of Washington. Thurs
day he was arrested for violat
ing Taylor's injunction against
demonstrations.
Assistant Attorney General
Walter Fischer, one of Kasper's
accusers, said the "only trouble
we've ever had here is because
of this man."
Kasper, executive secretary of
the council in Washington, D.C.,
was held Thursday night in lieu
of $10,000 bond.
Extra policemen again were
assigned to the Clinton High
school as a precaution against
any further violent uprisings.
jTiny Girl Due
Delicate Surgery
Montgomery, Ala. (U.R) An
Air Force plane left Thursday
on a low-level mercy flight to
Mayo Clinic, where experts are
expected to perform a delicate j
operation on the heart of a tiny
girl.
Sixteen-month-old Cara Mia
Crumpton was placed aboard a
plane at Maxwell Air Force i
Base to make the special flight j
to the clinic at Rochester, Minn. ;
The little girl, suffering from
a hole in her heart wall, was ;
unable to take a commercial air
liner because doctors here feared
it might fly at too great an
altitude. They said a high alti
tude flight could prove fatal.
Cara Mia, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Crumpton, stands
one chance in three of surviving
the emergency operation, doc
tors said.
"But we feel the child must (
have the operation if she is to
survive," the parents said.
Crumpton, a civilian Air Force
employee at Maxwell, and his
wife accompanied the child on i
the trip. Crumpton said the little
girl turned blue after exercise
and that her growth had been 1
retarded.
Because of the hole in her ; I
heart wall, he said, blood passes
through her lungs twice instead
of once.

Brink's Evidence
To Be Presented
Boston (U.R) The Brink's ! I

the longest jury empaneling in '. I
Mossachusetts court history, ex
pects to present its first evidence
today in the trial of eight men
accused of the nation's biggest j
cash robbery.
The 12-man jury and two al
ternates selected from a panel of j I
some 1800 "reluctant" venire- i I
men Thursday inspected the I
Brink's money fortress where !
masked bandits looted $1,219,000 j
six years ago.
Only the eight middle-aged
defendants were missing from '
the group of trial principals that ,
were whirled by buses through !
teeming North End streets to the
holdup scene. '
An army of newsmen and pho
tographers tracked the march of j
jurors and defense and prosecu

circled and inspected Brink's
sprawling exits and entrances.
