A RESOLUTION proposing to per
mit adjacent property to use a water
main as a lateral water main; to levy
an assessment on the property front
ing on the street wherein said water
main is laid; setting a time and place
for protests thereto and providing for
notice thereof.
WHEREAS the City of Medford lias
heretofore caused a water main to be
laid in Murphy Road adjacent to cer
tain real property in the City of Med
ford fronting on Murphy Road and
the Council being of the opinion that
said water main may be used by the
property fronting on that portion of
said main as laid in Murphy Road
from a point 478 feet North of Bar
nett Road to Walden Place, and
WHEREAS said water main has not.
as yet. been paid for and it appearing
to the Council that the use of said
water main as a lateral water main by
said property last above mentioned
will not materially interfere with the
use thereof for the purpose for which
it was originally laid, now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUN
CIL OF THE CITY OF MEDFORD.
OREGON
Section 1. That it is the opinion of
the Council that that part of the
aforementioned water main laid in
Murphy Road adjacent to certain real
property in the City of Medford front
ing on Murphy Road described as fol
lows: to-wit:
As laid in Murphy Road from a
point 478 feet North of Barnett Road
to Walden Place.
May be used by the property fronting
thereon as a lateral water main with
out materially interfering with the
use thereof for the purpose of a water
main, the purpose for which it was
originally laid, and the Council pro
poses to permit the owners of adjacent
property to use the same for lateral
purposes as aforesaid.
Section 2. It 4a the intention of the
Council to assess the property fronting
on Murphy Road wherein said water
main is laid as hereinbefore last des
cribed its proportionate share of so
much of the cost thereof as equals the
special benefit which will result to
said property from the use of said
water main as a lateral water main of
such size as would be required to
supdIv the property fronting on said
Murphy Road in case said water main
was not so used and the Council has
and does hereby determine that the
sum of $2.25 per front foot is the
amount of such special benefit and
the proportionate cost of such a
lateral water main to such property
as aforesaid and Intends to assess
said amount against such adjacent
property on account thereof.
Section 3. The Council will meet at
the hour of 7:30 o'clock P.M.. at the
Council Chamber in the City Halt on
the 18th day of September. 1956. at
which time and place all protests of
said assessment, as hereinbefore pro
vided for. will be heard.
Section 4. The Recorder is hereby
directed to serve notice hereof upon
the property owners aforesaid by pub
lishing this resolution 3 times in a
newspaper published and of general
circulation In said City and by posting
the same in 5 public places in said
City; said publication and said posting
to be not less than 10 days before the
date of said meeting.

Ernest J. Smith, loan mana
ger for the State Department of
Veterans' Affairs, said today the
new change would be faster and
also give more localized service,
particularly in areas away from
Portland or Salem.
Under the plan, when a veter
an gets a commitment irom the
department telling him his loan
has been approved, the depart
ment will forward the plans and
specifications to a field man or
appraiser In the area and have
him work directly with the
veteran.
"Previously," Smith explain
ed, "a veteran in Medford ,say,
who was building his home un
der our loan program had to
notify our Salem headquarters
that his structure would be
ready for an inspection In two
weeks. We then would write
out field representative or ap
praiser in the area and instruct
him to make the inspection."
The veterans' department has
made about 16,000 loans to vet
erans since 1945.
HORNBROOK
Little Leaguers End Season

Hornbrook As a wind-up for
the season, the Little Leagues
baseball team challenged their
dads to a ball game, which was
played Aug. 26 at the Horn
brook school diamond. The dads
played the positions of their
sons. Umpire was L. C. Walsh,
sponsor and manager of the
Hornbrook Little Leaguers.
In spite of some of the dads
coming up with a bad. case of
"butter-fingers," they gave the
kids some stiff competition, but
the kids out played them by a
score of 15 to 12.
This is the second year the
Hornbrook team has been in the
Yreka league, and they tied for
second place this season. Much
credit for this is due to the ex
cellent work of Coach Willie
Jones. All star players this year
were Steve McMaster, Butch
Hegler, Loren Cummins, Jr., and
Lauran Paine Jr. After the game
Sunday, there was a turkey dinner-picnic
at Lithia Park in Ash
land for the players, their fam
ilies, and fans. Gifts were pre
sented to Willie Jones, and to
Mrs. Lauran Paine who served
as scorekeeper for the season,
and Walsh was presented an
autographed baseball.
The Music club held its reg
ular meeting Aug. 25 at the
home of their teacher, Mrs.
Paul Greene. Taking part in the
program were, from Hilt, Billy
Greene, Barbara and Carlene
De Clerck, Marsha and David
Simmen; and from Hornbrook,
Penny Barnum, Linda Blanken
ship, Darrell Jones, and Danny
Metzen. David and Danny are
new pupils of Mrs. Greene's.

gartner of Yreka were visitors
Saturday afternoon at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Greene.

bar 47 years ago was the first
blues tune Handy ever wrote. It
was soon followed by "Beale
Street Blues" and "St. Louis
Blues."
When prohibition came along,
the Lorenzo Pacini Pee Wee
saloon closed, and never re
opened. Now workmen are tear
ing it down to clear the site for
a modern shop.
In using a stepladder, stand at
least two steps from the top to
avoid falling.

for two weeks longer.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ohlund
spent a few days this week visit
ing in Alturas, Calif. While there
they planned to see "Bud" Shook
and Jimmy, who lived here for
a numbers of years before
Shook's recent transfer to Al
turas. He is with the California
state quarantine service.
Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Jeter and
son, Bill, returned Sunday from
a motor trip to Los Angeles
where they visited Jeter's par
