Grange Notes
"MASTERMIND"? John (Johnny Dio) Dioguardia
(right) is escorted into Federal Court in New York by an
unidentified FBI agent. He was arraigned on charges that
he was the "mastermind" who ordered and paid for the
acid blinding of labor columnist, Victor Riesel. Dio
guardia, a notorious labor racketeer who has been under
almost constant investigation for months, was arrested
with his brother and two other men and charged with
conspiring to obstruct justice.

Appeals for Bond Cut

Victor Riesel, appealed today "for
" reduction of his $100,000 bail.
Carlino appeared to be the
only member of the Dio "brain
trust"' accused of masterminding
the April 5 attack against Riesel
willing to leave the comparative
sanctuary of jail.
Writ of Habeas Corpus
The ex-convict appeared in
Federal Court today on a writ of
hahcas corpus.
Carlino was not to be confuscd
with Joseph Peter Carlino, alias
Joseph Pilo, accused by the FBI
of being the "contact" man in
the sneak attack.

time loser, was known to be
"singing his head off" in hopes

Silenced by Fears
Fears of gangland vengeance
apparently have silenced
"Woppy" Carlino, Charles Tuso,
Nick Brando and Johnny Dio's
brother Tommy. All are accused
with Pohnny Dio of mastermind
ing and ordering Riesel's "acid
bath."
Noah L. Braunstein, Johnny
Dio's attorney, said the convicted
rackets boss would not try to
make the 5100,000 bail because
"John can't pay the premium."
Braunstein also said that John
ny Dio was "neither wealthy nor
dangerous" as the FBI and po
lice claim him to be.

joyed a barbecue and potluck
dinner at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Travis Littlefield Aug. 22.

and Mrs. John Cox, all of Shady
Cove, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
McKay from Phoenix, Ariz.
The Grange will have a bene
fit card party and entertain
ment for the Shady Cove-Trail

with its booster night in the
Shady Cove school gymnasium
October 20. A local talent pro
gram is planned and refresh
ments will be served. The public
is invited.
The next regular Grange busi
ness meeting will be Sept. 12 at
8 p.m. in the Shady Cove school
band room.

Neuberger Issues Statement
To 'Correct' Seaton Remarks

Sen. Richard L. Neuberger
(D.-Ore.) issued a statement to
day to "correct misrepresenta
tions" he said were made by In
terior Secretary Fred Seaton
who left Oregon aftej- a visit to
further the campaign of his pre
decessor, Douglas McKay, for the
U. S. Senate.
Neuberger cited power, the Al
Sarena case and granting of oil
drilling leases on wildlife ref
uges. Seaton, meanwhile, concluded
a tour throughout western Ore
gon with a television appearance
in Medford last night with Mc
Kay, who seeks to unseat Demo
cratic Senator Wayne Morse.
Regime Not Responsible
On power, Neuberger said
"the ' kilowatts added to the
Bonneville system in the last
three years all came from dams
authorized and started by Demo
cratic predecessors . . . the Mc
Kay regime was not responsible
for starting a single new federal
dam in the Columbia basin."
On AI Sarena he said, "Mr.
Seaton failed to mention that if
was not Senator Morse and I who
first objected to the Al Sarena
timber-mining deal, but the U. S.
Forest Service." He added that
Seaton "ignored the sworn testi
mony of the chief of the forest
service that never in his 32 years

been followed as McKay's depart

Timber 'Mining' Claimed
Democrats have claimed that
timber was "mined" off the Al
Sarena claims in southern Ore
gon.
On oil leases, Neuberger said,

Seaton, in answer to a ques
tion in Medford last night, said
any further action in the Al
Sarena case would have to come
from the Justice Department. He
said the committee which con
ducted a hearing on the case de
cided to refer it to the Justice
Department. He had been invited
by Charles O. Porter of Eugene,
Democratic candidate for Con
gress, to visit the mining claim.
Seaton said he turned it down
because of a tight schedule.
I Seaton, in Eugene, called the
upper Colorado river project
"the first basin-wide multi-purpose
water development program
in many years." He said that by
contrast with Bonneville dam
the upper Colorado project was
essentially a vast long-term
water storage and irrigation
plan. "Of course the power costs
will be higher than other projects
where power is a primary con
sideration," he added, referring
to critical comparison between
the costs of power at Bonneville
and the Colorado project.
Seaton praised McKay as a
man who "completely enjoys"
the confidence of President Eisenhower.
New Patrolman Joins
Medford Police Force
Frank Joseph Elsom, 236
North Ivy St., Medford, this week
joined the city police force, ac
cording to Police Chief Chtrles
Champlin.
Elsom replaces Donald R.
Davis, who has resigned to enlist
in the Air Force. Elsom is a
graduate of St. Mary's High
school and attended Southern
Oregon college. He served with
the Navy for four years. The new
patrolman is married and the
father of one child.

But the Democratic National
Committee said the Democrats
won't retaliate by trying to
change the name of the Repub
lican Party. The committee said
Democrats like to use that, be
cause it "is the brand name by
which our opponents' products is
known and mistrusted."
'Secret' Poll Taken
The Democrats said they took
a "secret nationwide public
opinion poll" that shows the
voters agree with them. They
said the "poll" shows voters
don't think much of the GOP
"ic" campaign either.
The committee disclosed the
results of its "poll" in an "urg
ent and confidential memo" re
leased Thursday night to party
leaders and newsmen. The memo
replied to a statement to United
Press by L". Richard Guy lay,
GOP National Committee pub
licity director, that the Republi
cans have adopted an "official
policy" of shortening Democratic
Party to "Democrat Party."
The Democratic committee ex
pressed some surprise that "a
grown man named L. Richard
Guylay has been assigned the
task of seeing that the "ic" is
dropped from all Republican
speeches and statements.
Not Caught Unawares
But the Democrats said they
were not caught unawares. It
said "from the Republican con
vention our secret agent had
wired an urgent coded warning
that this plot was afoot.
"It was obvious that this
strategy was the result of the
combined thinking of two of the
country's largest advertising
agencies, Robert Montgomery,
Murray Chotiner and Leonard
W. Hall, the only Republican
chairman who has outmaneu
vered Joe Smith in an open con
vention," the Democrats said.
Montgomery is President Ei
senhower's television adviser.
Chotiner was dropp'ed as a GOP
campaign strategist - after his
name came up in a congressional
investigation of alleged kick
backs in military purchasing.
Sen. Francis Attacks
Thornton on Program
State Senator Carl Francis of
Yamhill county. Republican can
didate for attorney general, last
night charged the incumbent,
Robert Y. Thornton, with in
competence and "deplorable po
litical excursions."
In a television appearance
here last night. Sen. Francis
commented, "No lawyer is right
all the time, but the incumbent
has been wrong In his legal
opinions too much of the time."
The Republican candidate
summarized his experiences
with the legislature since 1943'
and pledged, if elected, he
would conduct the office "in
proper manner, without politi
cal motivation and without sensationalism."

Portland UP.; Mrs. Gladys
Laycock, who claims she cannot
afford to mine the gold in her
Grant county holdings because
of the arbitrary price of $33 an
ounce set by the government,
was continuing her court fight
today against the 1934 gold act.
Federal Judge Claude McCol
loch yesterday dismissed a suit
brought by the woman against
Treasury Secretary George M.
Humphrey in which she sought
to enjoin him from enforcing the
gold reserve act against her.
The dismissal was on stipulation
of attorneys for both the govern
ment and plaintiff.
Mrs. Laycock then filed suit
against Frank J. Kenney, special
agent in charge of the Portland
office of the secret service. U S .
Attorney C. E. Luckey said Ken
ney's name was substituted be
cause in order to get the cabi
net officer into court the com
plaint would have' to be filed in
Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Laycock claims the fair
market value of the gold on her
claims should be S70.
