Overnight Campers
Pour Into State
In Record Numbers
Salem Overnight campers,
many of whom are seeking to
relax the strain on the family
vacation budget, are pouring in
to Oregon state parks in record
numbers, continuing a three-year-old
trend toward an annual
increase of 50 per cent, accord
ing to the travel information di
vision of the state highway de
partment. Nearly all state parks along
the Oregon coast are jammed to
the boundary lines, and some
are maintaining a higher daily
average than there are camp
sites available.
Last year, according to Parks
Director C. H. Armstrong, at
tendance totaled 158,000 camper
nights, each car occupant being
counted once for each night
spent in a state park. A prelimi
nary survey taken recently in
dicates the trend towards a 50
per cent increase is continuing,
and Armstrong looks for a toUll
of more than 230,000 camper
nights by the end of 1956.
' The average annual increase
began at nearly50 per cent in
1953, just one year after the
parks were opened to camping.
and has continued to rise com
paratively each year since then.
Armstrong said that principal
parks where the overnight camp
er might best find space during
the rush season are Oswald
West park, ten miles south of
Cannon Beach; Silver Falls, 26
miles east of Salem; Cove Pali
sades, five miles west of Culver;
Emigrant Springs, 26 miles east
of Pendleton; and Cascadia, 42
miles east of Albany.
480 Labor Day
Road Deaths Seen
Chicago U.P) The Na
tional Safety Council has esti
mated 480 persons may die in
traffic accidents during the La
bor Day weekend, the last holi
day of summer.
The council hoped, however,
that the three-day toll could be
held to no more than 350 the
normal traffic death toll for a
non - holiday Saturday, Sunday
and Monday at this time of year.
Cities and states made final
plans and preparations for
efforts to hold down the number
of accidents and deaths in their
areas.
Labor Day is usually rated by
the council as the second deadli
est holiday on the highways
Christmas being the first since
it signals the end of summer va
cations, the closing of cottages
and the opening of schools and
colleges.
Team play by the "man behind
the wheel" and the "man behind
the badge" was urged by the
council to keep the death toll at
a minimum and well below its
estimate.
Many states have cancelled
leave for state policemen during
the holiday. In some states. Na
tional Guardsmen will join po
lice efforts in patrolling high
ways and dangerous intersec
tions. The White Mountains of New
Hampshire include 86 peaks
more than 3,000 feet high, con
centrated in a small area close
to the 6,288-foot summit of Mt.
Washington, highest mountain
in the Northeast.
