Clarke Hamon, Grants Pass,
was recently named southern
Oregon fieldman for the state
department of agriculture bu
reau of nursery service. He is
a new member of the department
staff.
After training in Portland and
Salem, Hamon was assigned to
seven counties, including Jack
son and Josephine. He will be
responsible for the inspection of
nurseries, bulb plantings, green
houses and florists shops in those
counties.
A graduate of the University
of Idaho in horticulture, Hamon
comes to the department with an
excellent background for his
new work. He was for a period
manager at Caldwell, Idaho
his father's garden store and ad
joining nursery.
For two summers during his
university years he worked with
the Idaho department of agri
culture in cherry and peach tree
surveys on Western X and Little
cherry diseases. In 1951 he also
worked on pea weevil controls
for a freezing plant in Idaho.
He spent four years in the Air
Force, re-entering civilian status
earlier -this year. He is married
and has two children.
Southern Area Bank
Debits Show Rise
Eugene Bank debits for
July in the southern Oregon
area, including Medford, showed
a 16.3 per cent increase over
June and a 9.9 per cent increase
over July of last year.
The debits are collected
monthly from 152 Oregon banks
by the bureau of business re
search at the University of Ore
gon. The bank debits represent
the dollar value of checks
drawn against the deposit ac
counts of individuals and busi
ness firms. Debits are regarded
as good indicators of current
business activity.
Totals for the state for July
were $1,618,592,157, an increase
of 10.3 per cent over June and
an 8.1 per cent increase over
July, 1955.
Telephones Idled
By Lightning Strike

a lightning-struck cable of West
Coast Telephone company is ex
pected to be completed tomor
row, company ofiicials said to
day.
Some 1000 to 1200 subscrib
ers of the company on the east
edge of Portland have been with
out telephone service since Sat
urday when lightning struck the
cable at SE 200th ave. and Stark
St.
Ih New York state horse race
bettors sometimes fail to cash
their winning parimutuel tickets.
The state collected more than a
quarter of a million dollars from
that source in 1955.
