County Superintendent Tells
School Attendance Rulings
High school students lfvine in
school district in which there
is no high school may attend any
high school of their choice, ac
cording to Alf B. Mekvold,
county school superintendent.
Mekvold said that students
who have not already done so,
nvist secure eligibility certifi
cates from the office of the coun
ty school superintendent certi
fying them as legal residents of
a non-high district.
Obtain Blanks
A student who is making first
application for a certificate must
secure an information blank
from his school district clerk
and present it to the office of
the county school superintend
ent, properly filled out, he said.
The student will then be given
en eligibility certificate to pre
sent to the enrolling school.
A student who already has an
eligibility certificate and who
has the same address as when
the certificate was issued, may
secure a renewal by making a
personal application without
the requirement of the parent's
or school clerk's signature. Mek
vold added that high school reg
istrars do not enroll non-high
atudents without proper certifi
cation. Apply Early
He said that because there are
several hundred of these appli
cations, students are urged to
secure their applications early
and avoid the delay of a late en
rollment. Residents of former Kenwood
and Dewey school districts will
not be required to secure cer
tificates but will enroll directly
with the Medford schools, Mek
vold pointed out. He said that
residents of Oak Grove and West
Side school districts must secure
proper certification as they will

Mekvold said that he is re
minding parents that Oregon's
compulsory school law requires
all children between the ages of
7 and 18 to attend a public full
time school during the entire
school year.
Exceptions Listed
Exceptions to this law are chil
dren who are taught in private
or parochial schools, children
who have completed the 12
grades, children physically han
dicapped or who are subnormal,
children between the ages 7 and
10 who live more than one and
.a half miles from the nearest
public school and children over
10 who live more than three
miles from the nearest public
scnool. I he exemption does not
apply if a district provides its
own transportation, Mekvold ex
plained. There is only one other ex
cuse from school attendance, ac
cording to Mekvold. A schooi
board may grant an excuse to a
child from attending school if
the child has completed the
eighth grade and if further at
tendance would be educational
ly unprofitable for the child or
would cause hardship for the
child's family.
Mekvold stated that Jackson
county teachers should check
their health certificates and
must file them with the county
school superintendent before a
district can legally pay them.
