Sylvia Fred told me before
we were married that he never
wanted to have a family. He said
his prospects were poor and that
he didn't want Jlo bring up chil
dren the way he had been
brought up in poverty. I was
so much in love with him that
I agreed to marriage on the
basis that we were never to have
children.
Now it turns out that Fred
is doing much better than we
ever expected him to and we
are well able to support a fam
ily. I find that I want children
more than I ever thought I
would. I've promised Fred that
if ever we find he cannot make,
ends meet, I'd gladly go to work,
but he won't agree to this either.
He says we should break up
and I should marry someone else
if I want children so much. I love
Fred and I want to stay with
him, but I feel that life is very
empty without children. I am
now so unhappy I think of noth
ing else and cry all the time.
Fred It's true that- I'm now
making out better financially
than I could ever have hoped,
but I don't know how long this
will continue. There is a lot of
uncertainty in my business. I
don't believe in bringing up
children in a home where the
mother is working. People who
can't give their children the
right advantages in life shouldn't
have them. I can't stand Sylvia's
unhappiness and feel that we
really should split up if she
can't be happy with just me.
Th Council: This unhappy
man must come to realize that
his ears are not really based on
the financial problem, but on
his very deep lack of confidence
in himself and in life itself. His
statement that he believes he
and his wife should split up if
she can't be happy with "just
me" indicates that he sees him
self as unable to share his wife's
love with a child.
Fred is right when he believes
that he cannot give children the
"right advantages, but those
advantages are not the ones he
thinks they are. Surely he
knows that many big, happy,
healthy groups of youngsters
have grown up in the midst of
considerable economic distress.
The advantage Fred lacked
and is unable at this point to
give "his children is the kind of
love that produces in the young
an optimistic, self-confident, out
going attitude toward life. He
also obviously lacked a happy
family life.
Sylvia must have lacked some
of these advantages as well, or
she would not have agreed to a
marriage on the basis Fred pro
posed. She could not have been
so much in love with a man
who let her know that he in
tended to frustrate some of her
strongest desires unless she, too,
was deeply insecure.
This couple is undoubtedly
missing a great deal in life, but
nagging and crying on Sylvia's
part will only make Fred more
stubborn and will damage the
marriage relationship even fur
ther. Sylvia and Fred need more
specialized and personal guid
ance and should seek help from
a clergyman or family physician.

Sudden Death From Infection
Two grief -stricken parents
have just asked me about the
death of their six-weeks-old
child. He seem
ed to be per
fectly normal
and healthy un
til one day he
cried about 10
minutes before
he quieted
down. Twenty
minutes later
he was found

his nose. The pathologist who
examined the body found signs
of an "acute fulminating strepto
coccus infections of the lungs,
with septicemia." Fulminating
means lightningjike; streptococ
ci are germs which sometimes
are highly virulent, and septi
cemia means invasion of the
blood by "the bad germs.
The only comfort these un
happy people can now have is
that there is nothing that they
or anyone could have done to
help the situation. Such tremen
dously virulent Infections can
kill an infant or child or even
an adult within a matter ot
hours. Perhaps the germ or virus
was particularly virulent, or per
haps the child or person for some
reason had a low resistance to
infection. We doctors cannot be
sure.
Army physicians know that
a soldier can go to bed one night
feeling well, and in the morn
ing can be found dead in his
bed. Autopsy will show that
he died of a virulent meningit

Col. R. J. B. Page, Seattle district
engineer, has announced.
The buildings consist of five
storehouses, 18 feet by 32 feet,
with frame construction and con
crete floors (purchasers will not
be required to remove the con
crete); nine utility buildings, 12
feet bv 18 feet, all frame con
struction; and four observation
towers, 20 feet high, with frame
construction.

of Cave Junction and their val
ley neighbors are preparing for
the 16th annual Illinois Valley
jubilee celebration to be held
here over the Labor Day week
end, Sept. 1-3.
For th first time since its in
ception, the jubilee is being spon
sored solely by local citizens.
More than 100 persons are work
ing in 10 separate committees
readying the town for week end
events.
A queen contest will be held
during a dance Saturday even
ing. Sept. 1. Saturday afternoon
will feature children s games

A street parade will begin at
noon on Monday. Other events
planned for the three days in
clude log bucking, axe throwing.
