John Alden, with other car
penters among the Pilgrim Fa
thers, would be right at ease
with the popular home designs
of today, as they appear in the
many periodicals devoted to
building by the family. The hot
test thing in homes of 1956 is
the designing that is based on
"open framing."
That is, wall framing, with
widely spaced Douglas fir posts,
and roof beams of the same
timber species. Planking, com
monly west coast hemlock,
decks the roof, which, other
wise, serves also as the Interior
ceiling.
The 'half-timber house" was
the family dwelling of tradition
with the Plymouth Pilgrims. It
was distinctly an "open fram
ing" proposition, a skeleton of
posts and beams for outside
walls of the house, bracing
between, the gaps filled with
mud and straw, or with boards
and plaster, the roof decked
with hewn planks and thatch.
Rummy Raisings.
Walls were prefabricated as
flatwork on the ground by the
Pilgrim Fathers as a community
effort in many structures, and
every raising was a reason for
a party. Rum was considered a
social necessity for every occa
sion of the kind even for a
church raising!
Many of the open-frame Colo
nial structures survive sturdily
in our time, ash testimony to
the durability and flexibility of
wood in use for any design or
type of construction. Their basic
design also reappears in modern
pole frame" and "rigid pillar"
frame buildings and in today's
prefabricated structural panels.
The New England Colonists
had developed export trade in
precut posts and beams and pre
fabricated wall panels before
1700. A good market was found
in the sugar cane plantations
of the West Indies and the
molasses and rum industries that
gave support to the Caribbean
natives and their families.

a few institutions of faith and
culture in Colonial New Eng
land, as of unnumbered houses
and barns. The victories of
Ethan Allen and his Green
Mountain Boys against the Red
coats were due, some historians
asserts, to rum from the Indies.
The Vermonters thought rum to
be a necessity of war: So did
many a hero of Valley Forge.
Perhaps it was. Anyhow the
original rum trade began in
barter for open-framed houses,
packaged in New England.
Open Frame Ships. . .
By 1787 small ships were
frequently built with pre-shaped
keel, rib and planks, and then
transported, knocked down, to "
savage lands. John Meares, of
the British Navy, brought such
a cargo from China on his
second voyage to , the North
Pacific coast of America, with a
crew of Chinese carpenters and
shipwrights. In Nootka Sound,
Vancouver Island, Meares built
the first ship to be launched in
this region. The Yankee captain,
Robert Gray, sailed in on the
right day to help with the
launching. On his next voyage
Gray also carried a knocked
down schooner in the hold of
his Columbia. This became the
second ship to be built and
launched in the Pacific North
west. The Astorians did as much
with a third prefabricated ship
project.

beams. Dividers instead of load
bearing partitions in the house.
Pre-cut panels to fit wide spaces
between the exterior wall posts.
And not a few of the dividers
home bars with rum on tap.
What's new, anyway? Well,
nothing much.
