Livestock
The annual livestock auction
at the 4-H and Future Farmers
of America fair at the fair
grounds Friday night brought a
total of nearly $30,000 to the
young sellers, according to the
report of fair officials.
A total of 60,925 pounds of
beef was sold for $21,721.55. or
an average price of 35.7 cents
per pound. Animal sold aver
aged 923 pounds.
The swine sale totaled $5,-
020.17 for animals weighing a
total of 20.105 pounds, averaging
180 pounds each. Average price
per pound was 25 cents.
The sheep sale brought in $2.-
366 for animals averaging 93
pounds, sold at an average price
of 32.7 cents per pound. Total
weight was 7,535 pounds.

Coffee Salesman
Admits Slaying
School Teacher

slightly-built door-to-door coffee
salesman confessed Saturday he
killed a parochial school teacher
two months ago when she asked
him to leave his wife and child.
He led police to the girl's shal
low grave in a wooded section
near a cemetery.
Edward Eckwerth. 29. who
was brought here from Portland,
Ore., for questioning, broke
down at police headquarters and
admitted he fatally struck Rose
mary Spezzo. 24, last June 22,
several months after he struck
up a friendship with her while
selling her coffee.
He said he struck her on the
head with a large stone after
having intimate relations with
her.
Miss Spezzo's stunned parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Spezzo,
said they knew nothing of the
relationship between their
daughter and Eckwerth other
than that they chatted through
the doorway when he came to
sell coffee.
Knew Daughter Was Dead
"I knew all along my daughter
was dead,". Mrs. Spezzo said. "I
felt it. If she had run off, she
wouia have called or written and
would have remembered her
pop's birthhay in July."
Miss Spezzo's fully-clad, badly
decomposed body was found in a
slight hollow opposite Mount
Hope cemetery in nearby Hast-ings-on-Hudson,
N. Y. Police said
Eckwerth told them he hit her
on the head several times and
then left her unconscious and
dying.
Eckwerth, married and the
father of a two-year-old daugh
ter, was found in Oregon after
abandoning his coffee truck in
nearby Mt. Vernon, N. Y.
He was arrested in Portland on
an auto theft charge and then
was questioned about Miss Spcz
zo at the request of Yonkers au
thorities. Under questioning in
Portland, he insisted he knew
nothing of her disappearance. He
stuck to that story after he -was
brought here ' last Wednesday,
but finally broke down Saturday.

Chicago Slayings

Chicago policemen were en route
here today to question an ex-
convict who was described
"the hottest suspect yet" in the
slaying of three Chicago school
boys last October.
The FBI arrested 42-year-old
Norvel Degrove Friday in a San
Leandro used car lot on charges
of unlawful flight to avoid prose
cution for three midwest sex
crimes.
The FBI said Degrove had also
been the subject of a widespread
search for questioning In the
slaying of Robert Peterson, 13,
John Schessler, 13, and his
brother, Anton, 11. The boys'
nude bodies were found sprawled
in a ditch in a Chicago forest
preserve.
Degrove had been working in
a nursery here, a fact which the
FBI said checked out with one of
the major clues in the Chicago
murders. Traces of chloradme,
an insecticide used by gardeners,
were found in the scalp of the
Peterson boy. The FBI said De
grove had also worked as a
nurseryman in Chicago.
He had gone to the used car
lot to complain about a car he
bought three weeks ago.
SE Portland Area
Flooded by Raintall

block area in southeast Portland
was flooded Saturday when a
collapsed trunk sewer could not
handle the heavy rain that
pelted the city.
More than an inch of rain had
fallen by late afternoon from
the sudden rain storm that start
ed early Saturday morning.
The water extended from curb
to curb, filling scores of base
ments in the area between SE
17th and 14 aves. from Clinton st.
to the Southern Pacific railroad
tracks. Some parked cars were
stranded in the streets and the
only way residents could leave
their homes was by wading
through the muddy water.
City Commissioner William A.
Bowes rounded up 200 city work
ers and all the pumps available
to help pump out basements. He
said the sewer had collapsed
last week and workmen have
been working to repair it.
Thornton Said Using
Otfice for Own Gain

State Sen. Carl Francis, Repub
lican candidate for attorney gen
eral, Saturday told a group of
McMinnville businessmen "that
his opponent, Robert Y. Thorn
ton, has used his position as a
political instrument ior personal
gains." ' '
"Thornton," Francis said, "has
been severely criticized by news
papers throughout the state for
his repeated attempt to get thou
sands of columns of free pub
licity so that every voter in Ore
gon would know him."
Francis charged that Thorn
ton's career as attorney general
has been one of "complete inef
ficiency, lack of ability and of
contradictory rulings."
He stated that it is his respon
sibility as a candidate for attor
ney general to tell the people of
Oregon about the misconduct of
Thornton's administration.
Earthquake Recorded
San Diego U.R A fairly
strong earthquake that rocked
the Point Loma area near here
was recorded at 7:58.56 a.m.
(PST) Saturday by seismologists.
The shock had an intensity of
three on a scale of 12. There was
no report of damage.

Bay Area Crashes
Take Lives of Four
San Francisco U.R) Traf
fic accidents claimed the lives of
four Bay area residents Satur
day, including that of an 11-year-old
boy who was struck by a car
in Hayward while walking with
three of his brothers.
Richard Schmack, one of the
14 children of Mr. and Mrs. Oph
ir Schmack, Hayward, darted in
front of a car driven by Wilbur
Mahoney Jr., 33, of Burlingame.
Theodore Le Grande, 50, of
East Palo Alto, was killed in an
other accident near Hayward
Saturday morning when his car
collided with a truck.
Police said Le Grande's car
swerved across the double line
and crashed into the truck.
George J. Waitings, 62-year-old
owner of the Bee Line truck
dispatch Co. in Oakland, was
killed instantly when his car
crashed into another auto.
A farm laborer, 43-year-old
Julio Martinez Acosta, was killed
early Saturday when he was
struck down attempting to cross
U. S. Highway 101.
Father Accused of
Stabbing Infant
Los Angeles U.R) A two-month-old
boy was in critical
condition Saturday with a chest
stab wound his father was ac
cused of inflicting while under
the influence of narcotics.
The father, Richard D. Gallar
do, 24, was booked on suspicion
of assault with intent to commit
murder after his son, Richard A.
Gallardo, was stabbed with a
pair of scissors last night. .
Gallardo's wive, Genevieve,
23, told police she and her hus
band had quarreled and later she
heard the baby choking.
"I went to the crib and found
the scissors sticking out of the
baby's chest," she said.
Officers said Gallardo admit
ted taking a "fix" of heroin be
fore the stabbing.
"I can't explain why I stabbed
the baby," officers quoted him
as saying. "I picked up the scis
sors and stuck the point of them
on the baby's chest and pushed
down."

Navy Wives Appeal
For Continued Search
Iwakuni, Japan (U.R) The
wives of five Navy airmen mis
sing on a U.S. patrol plane shot
down off the Chinese Communist
coast sent an urgent appeal to
day to the Chief of Naval Op-
eratiens not to discontinue the
search for their husbands.
The wives sent the cable to
Adm. Arleigh Burke in Wash
ington after they learned that
the search for the 15 men still
missing was suspended temp
orarily. Sending the cable were the
