Hollywood U.R) A week
doesn't pass when someone
doesn't come up with a fine
theory about what's wrong with
he movies. The drive-ins and
TV ars tired excuses, along with
the feeling we've been making
too many dreary movies about
dreary people.
I think the movie industry it
self has been to blame because
for a long time there's been a
concentrated campaign to delib
erately keep the new Clark
Gables and Lana Turners away
from Hollywood.
For the past decade, poten
tial new talent has been con
sistently warned to stay away
from t h e movie capitol. "We
don't discover stars on soda foun
tain stools any more," the young
sters are told. "Movie-making is
a big business with no more time
for Cinderella tales so get your
training in schools, little the
aters, television or the stage and
wait until we send for you," the
big producers say.
So what has happened- Only
three new boxoffice stars were
developed within the last couple
of years Marilyn Monroe, Mar
lon Brando and Jimmy Dean. No
one else new can match the ex
citement and glamour of the
stars who made the movies what
they are today. Twenty years
ago we had them by the dozens.
Spirit Lest
It may be that movies today
have become such a cut-and-dried
proposition that the spirit of ad
venture has been lost. Yet any
director who firmly believes in
his own convictions should try
. to remedy this situation. I help-
: ed make stars of such one-time
newcomers as Errol Flynn, Elea
nor Parker, Ann Blyth, Joh
Garfield and Doris Day and
hope this won't be the eVid of my
record.
The movies don't need talent
as much as they need person
alities. It doesn't matter if a pe
sonality can act as long as he
or she looks good on the screen
If they have the talent, so much
the better. But the importan
things are to be natural an
make that warm contact with
the audience.

an illegal left turn. Before he
could finish writing the ticket
another motorist made the same
left turn. Two and a half hours
and 17 tickets later Tift looked
up, saw no more violators and
