Expert Says Farmers
Neglect Some Erosion
Lexington, Ky. (U.R) While
most modern farmers recognize
gullies and large silt deposits as
trouble that needs attention, they
may overlook less obvious signs
of erosion, according to a Uni
versity of Kentucky soil and wa
ter conservation expert, Lyle
Leonard.
Leonard said that appearance
of new stones and gravel on the
surface' after a field has been
cleared is usually a sign that
fine soil has washed away. Sim
ilarly, while frost heaving may
bring small stones to the surface
in some areas, if the soil beneath
a flat stone is higher than the
soil around it, making a little
pedestal, it indicates that sur
rounding soil has washed away.
Further exposure of boulders
or bedrock also indicates a low
ered soil surface. Occasionally a
farmer who hasn't noticed a gra
dual erosion of his soil will strike
with his plow a drain tile that
originally was buried deep
enough to be safe from damage. ;
Exposed tree roots also show :
soil washing.

Center For Crippled Children
In answer to my column on
artificial limbs for children.
Mrs. B. C. Saunders writes me
iiiii iihii about the pi-
fef , A- I o n e e r work
r 1 that has been
done in the
Michigan
Crippled
Children Com
mission in
Grand Rapids.
She says they
were the first
uaiin Ajvare in the united
States to establish an amputee
program devoted exclusively to
children. Today, even small
children a few months old,
when born without an arm or
leg, are being fitted with an art
ificial limb.
I am always glad to hear of in
stitutions in which magnificent
work is being done for children.
Achondroplastic Dwarfs

Portland, Salem Hotels
Lose Money To Gunman
Portland U.R) A Salem
hotel and a Portland hotel were
held up yesterday, each for
the second time in recent days,
and police were wondering if a
long-distance gunman was re
sponsible for both.
The Argo hotel in downtown
Salem was held up at 12:15 a.m.
and the Ockley hotel in down
town Portland was held up at
2:20 a.m. In each case the young
gunman reminded his victim it
was a second visit. If it was the
same gunman, his two tries 50
miles apart netted him a paltry
$36.

bones. It appears to be transmit
ted through what is called a
dominant gene, but there are
puzzling cases in which the in
heritance does not follow the
"rule." It is transmitted from
the affected parent to the offs-
spring without skipping genera
tions. When an achondroplastic
child is born to normal parents
it is thought to be due to what
is called a mutation, or a sudden
change of a normal gene to a
defective one. This accident
happens to about on in 44,000
of the population.
Parents of such children write
asking if there is any clinic to
wmch they can take the child
for treatment, and I have to
answer sadly that I know of
none. There is no known treat
ment for the disease. These
dwarfs appear to be normal ex
cept for the lack of growth in
their long bones. They are
sturdy and long-lived. When
they marry, their children usual
ly show the defect.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

Tribune Syndicate, 1956.)
