DEWiine Impresses Newcomer As Giant Three-Layer Umbrella
Point Barrow, VUaska (U.R)
The first description of the
DEWiine (Distant Early Warn
ing) gives a newcomer to these
"classified" parts the impression
of a giant, three-layered umbrella
one designed to protect an
entire continent against the
deadly rain of an enemy attack.
The DEWiine, top layer of the
umbrella, is actually a string of
radar sites stretching across the
top of North America. Its pur
pose to pick up any approach
ing planes, alert squadrons of
Jet Interceptors scattered about
the Arctic wastelands and issue
a warning throughout North
America if the approaching air
craft should prove to be an
enemy force.
Four-Six Hour Warning
For example, the site here
could issue a four-to-six-hour
warning to Seattle should the
occasion arise.

There are no known defense
installations, such as guided mis
siles or anti-aircraft batteries, at
DEWiine sites, thus the stem or
strong point of the umbrella is
made up by the air arm.
Ladd Air Force Base at Fair
banks, one of the closest mil
itary camps to Point Barrow,
has eight jet fighters described
by the Air Force as "loaded for
bear" on a 24-hour-a-day alert
and ready to scramble at any
time. These planes, F-89D
"Scorpions," can cover th ap
proximate 500 air-miles from
Ladd to Barrow in less than 45
minutes, thus intercepting the
enemy over practically worth
less and uninhabited territory.

Should an enemy force work
its way undetected through the
DEWiine, although seemingly
impossible, it would still have
to reckon with the two remain
ing layers of the umbrella, the
mid - Canada line, stretching
across the country at approx

one." It can be assumed, how
ever, that the DEWiine consists
of slightly more than four dozen
of these sites.
MacArthur Head
All But Concedes
Washington (U.R) The di
rector of MacArthur for Presi
dent, Inc., today all but conceded
the GOP nomination to Presi
dent Eisenhower.
However, MacArthur cam
paign Director Ervin Hohensee
insisted there is still a "possi
bility something might happen.''
"It looks like a foregone con
clusion but if the convention
should suddenly become an op
en one, I'm ready to fly to San
Francisco immediately," he
said.
Hohensee planned to fly to the
convention with 30,000 MacAr
thur buttons Monday and again
Tuesday, but he saifi he cancelled
plane reservations both times for
two reasons:
1. No convention tickets.
2. Things look blacker and
blacker for his man's chances.
Hohensee said he made reser
vations with the Republican Na
tional committee several months
ago for 10 convention tickets
and three rooms for MacArthur
headquarters.
"Now they say they can't find
the reservation," he said. "What
is going on is open for conjecture."
Troop Transport
Crash Kills Three
Palm Beach Air Force Base,
Fla. (U.R) Three crewmen
were killed and three critically
injured Tuesday night when -a
lumbering 7124 troop transport
crashed and burned while at
tempting an emergency landing.
Air Force officials were not
certain how three of the mem
bers survived the crash, but said
their escape was "almost mir
aculous." Apparently they were hurled
free of the four-engine plane
when it smashed into a field,
then rushed to a hospital by an
unidentified civilian, one official
said.
Two of the other bodies were
recovered from the smouldering
wreckage and a third was found
in a field near the crash scene.
Identities of the dead and
injured crewmen were withheld
pending notification of next of
kin. -
The Air Force said the Globe
master, which can carry 200 fully-equipped
troops, was on a rou
tine training mission when the
crash occurred. The plane was
attached to the 1740th Air Trans
port squadron at this south Flor
ida base.
Reynolds Talks
Asked To Resume
Washington (U.R) The Fed
eral Mediation service has call
ed for resumption of wage nego
tiations Thursday in the 22-day
old Reynolds Metals Co. strike.
Clyde Mills, assistant federal
mediation director, sent tele
grams Tuesday night to repre
sentatives of the company and
the striking United Steelworkers
summoning them to a meeting
here Tuesday afternoon.
About 9,000 workers at nine
of the company's aluminum
plants have been on strike since
Aug. 1 over wage contract de
mands. Negotiations broke of here a
week ago Monday when union
negotiators were reported to
have turned down an offer sim
ilar to the wage contract agree
ment reached earlier with the
Aluminum Company of Ameri
ca. -The Alcoa contract calls for
46-cent hourly wage hikes and
fringe benefits combined over a
three year period.
