Raft Half-Starved
Passengers Arrive
At Port in England
Falmouth, England (U.R)
Two bearded men and a raft ar
rived here from Canada today,
victoriously ending an 88-day
battle with the stormy North At
lantic. The "third member and cap
tain of the crew incongruously
met his shipmates in a taxi.
The splicedlog raft, L'egare
II (the lost one) was towed tri
umphantly into Falmouth Har-
ity of Riesel
Attacker Debated
New York (U.P.i The FBI
and New York police disagreed
widely today over identity of
a murdered hoodlum suspected
of the acid-throwing attack
which blinded labor columnist
Victor Riesel.
The district attorney's office
said it was "seriously consider
ing" exhuming the body of
Abraham Tclvi, 21. whom the
FBI claims was killed by mob
sters because acid burns on his
face made him too "hot."
Tclvi was found slain on the
lower East Eide on July 28.
A police autopsy, however,
disclosed no acid burns on the
body's face. The autopsy also
indicated a discrepancy in the
size of the body compared to
descriptions of the acid-thrower
given by witnesses to the attack
on Riesel.
Police "broke" their own case
Monday with the surrender of
Hugh Francis Drescher, 23.
wanted for questioning about a
wave of gangland executions
which followed the acid throw
ing incident. Drescher was an
acquaintance of the murdered
Telvi.

bor by the motor-driven Fal
mouth life boat. Aboard were
Gaston Vanackere, 31, and Marc
Modena, 29, both of Montreal.
Mak Arrangements
Expedition leader Henri Beau
dot also of Montreal, boarded a
passing ship as the raft neared
the English coast Monday and
came ashore to make final ar
rangements for the L'egare II's
arrival here.
Beaudot took a taxi to the
custom house quay early today
and arrived just as the low-slung
log raft waddled into the har
bor behind the life boat.
The sea was calm and the sun
glittered across the water as
hundreds of Britons lined the
docks to cheer the arrival. It
was the biggest welcome in Fal
mouth since 1952, when Capt.
Kurt Carlsen arrived here after
his fight with the sea aboard the
crippled Flying Enterprise.
Le egare II. a 220-square foot
vessel made of cedar beams lash
ed together with rope, sailed
from Nova Scotia May 24.
Braved Near-Starvation
The three men from Montreal
braved mountainous seas, near-
starvation and thirst to prove
that the Atlantic like the Pa
cific could be navigated with
the most primitive equipment.
"We have been starving," said
Beaudot as he stepped ashore on
Monday night. "For the last 30
days we have been without
food." He said he and his com
panions lived on fish and plank
ton, while rain was their only
source of drinking water.

McKay Lauds Langlie
At GOP Convention;
Wife Tells Her Views
San Francisco (U.R) Douglas
McKay; Republican candidate
for the U.S. senate and former
secretary of the interior, intro
duced Gov. Arthur B. Langlie
yesterday evening at the Repub
lican national convention.
"I am particularly grateful
for the opportunity of presenting
your keynote speaker," McKay
said, "because I am privileged
to bring you a warm personal
friend, and one of the great
Republicans of our time, a man
whose vision and devotion,
whose energy and enthusiasm
have carved a proud record of
progressive leadership in his
home state of Washington and
throughout the great Pacific
Northwest."
McKay went on to say that
Langlie's "leadership reflects
the self-reliance of our North
west pioneers and at the same
time the deep and sympathetic
concern of the pioneer for the
welfare of his neighbors and
well-being and safety of the
community . . ."
San Francisco (U.R) Mrs.
Douglas McKay, wife of the Re

addressed a meeting of women
delegates to the Republican con
vention here today.
Mrs. McKay told her audience
she felt there was a definite
place for a wife with her hus
band when he is campaigning
for public office.
Mrs. McKay said that a can
didate's wife can be a great aid
to her husband by attending
women's groups while he has
speaking engagements elsewhere
in the town and by taking care
of the little things such as re
membering1 names, telephoning
and writing letters.
Mrs. McKay said that the most
important thing fo a candi
date's wife was to simply be
herself and remember that the
public wants to meet and see
the wife as well as the candidate.

Actress, Photogra
Differences After
Hollywood (U.R) Curvaci
ous Diana Dors and a bruised
United Press photographer ap
parently have decided to "let by
gones be bygones" in the wake of
Hollywood's most celebrated
dunking in years.
The British actress and three
others wound up in the swim
ming pool of her fashionable
Beverly Hills home during a
gay party Sunday night. Photo
grapher Stewart Sawyer re
mained dry but was decked by
the star's husband, Dennis Ham
ilton, a former heavyweight
professional boxer.
Hamilton pounced on Sawyer
after accusing him of pushing his
wife into the pool "to get an ex
clusive picture." Sawyer denied
the charge, declaring he was
standing some distance from the
pool with actor Guy Madison.
Miss Dors and her husband
both underwent x-ray examina
tions at their physician's office
Monday. Dr. Stanley Immerman
pher Patch Up
Poolside Fight
said the actress was suffering
from a sprained back while her
husband had a fractured right
hand. Sawyer suffered a broken
nose and numerous bruises and
lacerations on his head. He was
unconscious when rescued from
the beating.
The photographer, however,
said he would not take any legal
action, although under Calif
ornia law an attack by a profes
sional boxer constitutes grounds
for charges of assault with a
deadly weapon. Miss Dors and
Hamilton also agreed to forget
about the incident.
