Men Take Burning
Coal from Freighter
Portland UK Workmen
Saturday began unloading
smoldering cargo of coal from
one of the holds of the Orizaba,
a freighter bound for the Orient
with 8600 tons of coal.
The Orizaba had departed
from Portland Monday for
Korea.
Smoke was first noticed early
Wednesday, coming from the
ships smoke detecting system,
when the ship was some 490
miles at sea.
Capt. A. L. Ingenitao, Brook
lyn, N. Y., said the fire was start
ed by spontaneous combustion
in the forward No. 2 hatch.
The ship reached, port here
Friday afternoon. Fireboats stood
by while the hatch was opened
in fear the fire would break out
in force when sufficient oxygen
reached the cargo.
The fire continued to smould
er however, and hatches were
closed until yesterday morning
when plans were made to re
move the burning coal into steel
freight cars.
The 403-foot ship will then re
load additional coal and continue
the journey to the Far East.

The Republicans have wheel
ed up to the Cow Palace six
trailers for conferring and re-
laxing by party moguls and high
government officials. They are
parked just outside the building.
One of them will be used by
cabinet members and the White
House staff. Bertha Adkins, as
sistant chairman of the Nation
al Committee and head of its
women's division, will occupy an
office trailer with her staff.
Two of the trailers will be
used as dressing rooms by enter
tainers at the convention. These
include Ethel Merman, Dennis
Morgan, Percy Botkin, Jane
Powell, Irene Dunne, Lucille
Norman, John Charles Thomas,
Patrice Munsell, Nat King Cole,
and Brian Sullivan.

Connie Haynes gave birth to a
nine pound, H' i ounce son Sun
day night at Cedars of Lebanon
hospital here.
The infant was the second
child for the singer and hef test
pilot husband, Robert De Haven.
Their daughter, Kimberley
Marie, was born in July, 19S5.

Commission Orders
Work on Zoo Road-
Portland (U.R) The State
Highway commission Friday
pledged to start work on a $400,
000 access route to the new Port
land zoo next year.
A delegation from the zoo
commission and park depart
ment urged that a cloverleaf
and overpass approach to the
zoo be completed before any
general reconstruction of Can
yon road is undertaken.
The commission, after hearing
arguments and the need for the
overpass, directed W. C. Wil
liams, state highway engineer,
to shove the project ahead so
construction can be done next
year.
Harry Buckley, city parks su
perintendent, told the commis
sion that when the new zoo, mu
seum and golf course are opened
next year at least 5,000 cars a
day will be added to traffic on
Canyon road which now carries
22,000 he said.

GOP Convention Has
550 Women Delegates
San Francisco (U P.) The
Republican National Convention
has 555 women delegates and
alternates, largest distaff repre
sentation in the party's history.
Miss Bertha S. Adkins, direct
or of GOP women's activities,
said the ladies have picked tip
166 additional seats since the
1952 convention. There- are
2.646 delegates and alternates
altogether.
Ranking Catholic in
Great Britain Dies
London (U.R) Bernard
Cardinal Griffin, Britain's rank
ing Catholic churchman, died
early today while on a vacation
in the south of England.
The 57-year-old cardinal who
had been ailing for several years
with heart trouble died on the
feast day of St. Bernard for
whom he was named.
Griffin was appointed to the
sacred college of cardinals in
1946, and at that time was the
youngest member of this highest
ranking Catholic body. He first
suffered from high blood pres
sure in 1949, and had heart at
tacks in 1951 and 1955.
He was appointed sixth arch
bishop of Westminster in 1943.
Persons Indicted
By Multnomah Jury
Appear in Court
Portland (U.R) Most of
the persons indicted by the Mult
nomah county grand jury in its
recent probe into vice and cor
corruption in the city appeared
in court Friday.
Most of those appearing did
not enter pleas but rather enter
ed motions or demurrers or ob
tained further setovers
Police Chief Jim Purcell Jr.
entered a plea of not guilty to
charges of malfeasance in office.
Another not guilty plea was
made by Thomas Johnson who
had been charged with conspir
acy in the selection of an Exposition-Recreation
center site.
Also pleading not guilty was Da-
,vld L. Nancy who w Indicted
on a perjury charge.
District Attorney William M.
Langley filed a motion to set
aside the two indictments re
turned against him charging
malfeasance in office and con
spiracy to open the city to gamb
ling. His motion charged that
the indictments did not bear the
indorsements of the private pros
ecutors and that the names of
witnesses were omitted. He also
charged that a bill of indictment
was not presented to the grand
jury until after that body heard
the evidence contrary to law.
Attorneys for one of the eight
city policemen indicted, Nor
man Reiter, moved to set aside
the complaint. Demurrers were
entered for the other seven po
lice officers.
Attorneys for James B. Elkins
moved for dismissal of wire tap
ping charges against the night
life figure and entered demur
rers to a dozen other charges.

Officers Cite Driver
After 2-Car Accident
Arthur Reuben Clement, 82.
of 211 Cottage st., Medford, was
cited by state police Saturday I
afternoon for failure to yield the
right of way after his car was
involved in an accident on High
way 99 at the Talent junction.
State police said Clement en
tered the highway from Colburn
rd. and pulled out in front of a
vehicle operated by Veya Peart,
51, Ashland. Mrs. Peart was
southbound on Highway 99.
Both cars were damaged but
there were no injuries.
