One of the newest of the swimming pools constructed in Medford this summer was built by Mr. and Mrs.
Wright Scoville at their home, 20 South Barneburg road. The pool is being used by many friends as well as the
Scoville family, for every afternoon two groups of youngsters are taking swimming lessons under the supervision
of Miss Mike Carter. Pictured here are Billy Mohr, Susan Wakefield, Sharon Lambert, Sandra Bates and Larry

This spring Mr. and Mrs. Robert Voegtly added a swimming pool to their garden at 2012 Westerlund drive,
and it has been in use since April. Lou Elsa Voegtly, who will be a sophomore in Medford High school this fall,
poses here on the diving board while her brother, Carl (at steps) and the Deakins boys. Booth (wearing dark
trunks) and Tom look on. While the concrete was still fresh, Mr. and Mrs. Voegtly and their children marked the
pool with the date and their four hand prints. A sun deck at the back of the house overlooks the pool and garden
and this is a favorite spot for the family to serve meals.

: spending many happy hours in their new swimming pool at the
family home, 30 South Barneburg road. Here Mr. Wimberly floats
in the cool water, Carolyn is taking her ease on an air raft while
Lee and Mrs. Wimberly sun themselves. Even Barney, the Wimberly's
Bassett hound, named for the road on which the family lives, likes
to sit at the edge and look at the water.

The Water's Fine

Gone are the days oHhe "ole swimming hole." Today's young-
sters, and their parents, swim in a municipal pool, efficiently
managed and with lifeguards on duty at all hours, or merely open
the door at home and dive into the family pool.
Because Rogue valley weather makes swimming a pleasure
for many weeks each summer, and because modern methods have
made the cost less prohibitive, many families in this area have
added private swimming pools to their gardens. One valley firm
alone has constructed abqut 20 pools in recent months.
This doesn't constitute the drain on city water supplies one
might imagine since most of the pools have filtering and purifi
cation plants which makes it possible to clean and sterilize the
water and pump it back into the pool. Also in common use are
laxge vacuum cleaning devices which pick up dirt particles off the
sides and bottom of the pool and deposit them in the filter trap.
Some pools are heated, and one large pool recently constructed
in Medford even has a fiber glass cover, motor driven, which rolls
out over the water; this not only keeps out leaves and trash but
insures against anyone falling in the water by accident when the .

Nine-year-old Larry Scoville, son of the Wright Scovilles, takes
a swimming lesson every afternoon this summer and can also play
in the water anytime he pleases now that the family has a back yard
pool. Larry plays in a small rubber boat and Mrs. Scoville enjoys the
morning sunshine with the family dog. Lady. While most of the new
pools constructed here are in rectangular shape, some ere in maple
leaf or other design to make the best use of available space.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Luther Jr. built a family pool at Their orchard home in Fern Valley last fall. Mrs. Luther
is shown here with the couple's attractive 12-year-old daughters, Marta (at left) and Midi. The twins, who both
love to swim, attended school in Phoenix last year. The Luthers' poor was constructed to fit the contour of their
hillside garden. Like other Medford homemakers with new swimming pools, Mrs. Luther says the family now
spends most of its time outdoors either in the pool or lounging on the terrace. '
