day that Victor Miller, independ
ent candidate for the U.S. Sen
ate, had filed petitions contain
ing about 5,000 signatures in his
effort to get on the November
ballot.
Miller, a retired Portland
army officer, has until Aug. 27
to produce 17,002 signatures vali
dated by county clerks, O'Hara
said.
O'Hara added that Miller was
a little apprehensive about his
chances of getting in the race
with Sen. Wayne Morse and

ing ahead with his one-man 1

A Hunner Stricture In A Kidney
Some persons ask what is a
Hunner stricture of the ureter?
The ureter is the tube that car
ries the urine
from the kid
ney to the uri
nary bladder.
There are
h u n d reds of
people who
keep undergo
ing treatment,
sometimes for
months, for
nailer Uvirn SUCH a stric
ture. My experience wUh most
of these people has been that
when I send them to a consult
ing urologist, he says he cant
find a stricture. Then when I
examine the woman carefully
and talk to her I usually find
that she has a nervous type of
misery which runs from her
face down to her foot on one
side. Her distress is not limited
to her loin, and it does not seem
to have any relation to her kid
ney. Usually, in my experience,
the dilations do not work a cure,
and usually I find' that the pa
tient is a bunchof nerves.
Some of my urologist friends
may write to tell me that there
are such things as Hunner stric
tures, and that the cure scores
of patients with them. Their
argument could be that I see
only the few persons who are
not relieved by urologic treat
ments, and who may never have
had anything wrong with the
kidney. AH I am sure of is that
when the misery runs down all
one side of the body, and when
the patient is a bunch of nerves,
it is doubtful if what looks like
a stricture of the ureter is the
cause of the pain.
Ectopic Pregnancy
All women, of child-bearing
age should koow that there is
such a thing as ectopic preg
nancy or tubal pregnancy. Nor
mall, when the ovum or little
egg is discharged form an ovary
it is picked up by the end of the
fallopian tube which runs out
from the upper corner of the
uterus or womb. The little egg is
then carried by a wave-like mo
tion towards the womb where,
if it has become fertilized, it
should become bedded down and
start growing to form a baby.
Somewhere along the way down
the fallopian tube the little egg
may meet a spermatozoon from
the husband, and then it may
become fertilized. If it isn't
fertilized it will not grow.
Unfortunately, in some cases,
perhaps because the lining of
the" fallopian tube is not perfect-

Youngster Drowns
In Deschutes Area
Bend (U.PJ Four-year-old
Bryan Jerrott drowned in Davis
lake in the upper Deschutes
country Tuesday. His body was
recovered in 10 feet of water.
He was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Kenneth Jerrott of Dallas,
While Jerrott, an employee of
Babler Bros. Road Contractors,
Redmond, was working on con
struction of a road for the Gil
christ Timber company, Mrs.
Jerrott and Bryan visited Davis
lake. They had walked out on
a stock bridge at the lake. Mrs.
Jerrott looked away for a min
ute and the boy disappeared. At
first she thought the boy had
roamed into nearby woods and a
search was started. Then the
lake was searched and the body
was found.

there. Usually, after two or
three months, the embroy 'be
comes so big that it breaks open
the tube, and then the woman
starts bleeding internally. With
this, she is likely to become
week and terribly nauseated,
with a pain in the lower part
of her abdomen. Under these
circumstances, unless the correct
diagnosis is quickly made and a
surgeon operates to remove the
ruptured tube, the woman can
bleed to death.
The important thing for a wo
man to know is that if she miss
es a couple of periods and then
has painful spell that looks
something like an acute appen
dicitis, she must quickly call a
surgeon and tell his that it may
well be that she has been preg
nant. This will help him greatly
in making the diagnosis, and
deciding whether or not to
operate right off.
It's too bad the way that
guy got the smile wiped off
his face.

most enjoyable part of my work
and sometimes the most em
barrassing is the interviews I
do with kids on CBS-TV's "House
Party" every day.
One of the questions I fre
quently ask the children is how
their parents met. One four-year
old girl stated unequivocally,
"Mom and Dad were roommates
in college."
Or the young cowboy who
wasn't quite sure but ventured,
"I think Mommy and Daddy
were twins and lived together
in the same house." But about
the most realistic answer to this
question was, "I couldn't pos
sibly know because I was a baby

Exciting Situation
We never rehearse the kids,
reasoning that if the whole sit
uation is new and exciting to
them they'll be more spontan
eous. We ask the school to send
children between the ages of
four and 10.
These little ones are like very
old people. After people reach
70 or 75 years of age they don't
care much any more what peo
ple think of them, or what they
say or do. All the inhibitions
they build up over the years dis
appear as they enter the twi
light of life.
Little children are much the
same, but the reasons are in re
verse. They haven't lived long
enough to (build up inhibitions.
They're lots of fun.
