Television Comes of Age: Ray burn's
Head Uncovered and No Glare Results
By DOUG QUIGG

Convention Hall, Chicago
U.Ri Television came of age
Tuesday night. Sam Rayburn
appeared on stage at the Demo
cratic convention without any
makeup on his naked head.

There was no reflected glare
on the screen.
Science marches on. During
the 1952 Democratic National
Convention, Chairman Rayburn
was forced to submit to a top
soil application of dulling,
orange-brown powder onto one
of the world's most famous bald
pates.
The reason given was to keep
his from casting a baby-spot
beam upon the screen with the
reflected glory of the bright TV
lights turned on the convention
platform.
It was 8:30 p.m. when Ray
burn came on to take over as
permanent chairman. A great
throng of delegates had gathered
in front of the lectern to greet
him, and the band was playing
"The Eyes of Texas Are Upon
You." In strode Mr. Sam.
Scientists gasped. His head
was glowing pink. Reporters on
the platform blinked and took a
closer look. The skin was pure
Rayburn and no pancake.
"I'm sure there's no pancake
makeup." a newsman with a
vantage view reported. "If there
is any at all, it's mere crepes
suzette and very little of that."
Chairman Sam nodded twice
at the yelling crowd, banged the
gavel, said "the house will come
to order," banged again,
frowned, smiled, and got right
down' to business.
It was pretty certain, after his
appearance, who has earned the
title "Mr. Democrat." Temporary
Chairman frank G. Clement in
troduced the permanent chair
man as "Mr. Democrat himself,
the great one, the honorable Sam
Rayburn."
The paraders bore signs say
ing "Mr. Sam is Mr. Demo,"
"Mr. Demo Rayburn." and "Un
cle Sam Rayburn." Sen. Wayne
Morse later said it was a great
honor for him to be introduced
to the convention "by Mr. Dem
ocrat himself."
Delegates from the voteless
District of Columbia turned up
wearing fancy Indian-type head
dresses depicting the capitol
dome and the Washington mon
ument. Each was inscribed: "We
want to vote. The DC wants a
vote."
Danrinc California rtelptratM
who staged a demonstration on
the , introduction of Richard
Richards, Democratic nominee
for senator, carried a sign say
ing: "Los Angeles city limits
pop. 20.073,210." One of the
marchers carrying a Richards
sign was Rep. Jimmy Roosevelt.
During Morse's speech, a large
crowd gathered at one side of
the auditorium, and to all ap
pearances something important
was happening. There waf.

Inferrupiibie Power
Supplies Predicted
Portland (U.R) Bonneville
Power administration said today
it may have to reduce interrupt
ible power supplies by 40 per
cent in late August or early Sep
tember. Public and private utilities
which are on a "firm" commit
ment, would not be affected by
the cut-back.
BPA said that while demands
on the federal power system
have increased 10 per cent, in
stallation of generators at Chief
Joseph dam has been delayed be
cause of the Westinghouse strike.
Power production at McNary
dam will be reduced because
water will be lowered behind
the structure to allow contractors
at The Dalles dam to carry on
their work.
BPA said the Columbia river
water level-had been higher than
usual because of the heavy snow
melt but is receding rapidly.
Rainfall prospects are dim.

Study Being Made of
Illuminated Clouds
Iowa City U.R Hugh M.
Johnson, University of Iowa as
tronomer, is making an intensive
study of the illuminated clouds
that are formed between the
stars in the universe.
A $3,700 grant from the Na
tional Science Foundation will
help finance the study.
Johnson, an assistant professor
of astronomy, said the clouds he
will study are made up of rare
gases and dust and are illumin
ated by the stars near them.
He said the purpose of the
study is to measure the bright
ness and color of the surface il
lumination. Most previous stu
dies of brightness by astronomers
have dealt with the stars rather
than the inter-stellar clouds,
Johnson said.
