you know the right store.
The flow of customers in and
out of the solace-dispensing cen
ter is steady.
Some of the shops are labeled
as drug stores. But other than

drinks or headache powder, the
resemblance to today's super
market-type drug stores is slight

things. But I guess a lot of it is
just plain psychology.
You can buy love, in pow
dered form, for 50 cents, but it
takes a dollar to hex your em
ployer with "box-fix powder."
Bricks for Luck
Almost any situation has a
remedy at the voodoo stores.
Brick dust, if it comes from the
voodoo store, can bring luck.
A pinch of it on the front
steps and in the corners of the
room changes the pattern of
living, users tell.
But If you're really in a hur
ry, the "Fast Luck Incense" is
recommended.
The love powder is the most
popular ware, and has its varia
tions. The femme fatale favors a
whiff of "Follow-Me-Boy Pow
der."
And they say that unfriendly
neighbors can be replaced with
compatible ones if some "Mov
ing Powder" is sprinkled around
their premises.

also will reveal "Easy Life Pow
der," "Gambler's Lucky Pow
der." Hell's Devil Oil," War
Water." "Peace Water" and
"Mad Water."

The color of a voodoo candle
determines its purpose. Believ
ers burn the magic tallow lights
in secret and tell their wish out
loud. Red candles are supposed
to bring victory over enemies.
Pink ones should stimulate
love, green ones draw money,
and white ones produce peace.
Advocates say evil comes from
the brown candles, and death
from, slim tapers of black.
However, the casual visitor
will have trouble purchasing the
gris-gris powders and charms.
If you can find them, voodoo
proprietors are a suspicious lot
and make no claims for their
wares.
The love powders are sold in
unmarked packets. And a small
can of incense is labeled "Al
leged Money Drawing Incense."

Brother-in-Law of
Bunche Found Dead
Washington (U.R) Roscoe
W. Harris, 65, brother-in-law of
United Nations official Ralph J.
Bunche, was found dead in his
real estate office here yesterday,
his body bound and gagged.
The discovery was made by
Harris' wife.
Deputy Coroner Richard Ros
enberg placed the time of death
at about 10 a.m.
Mrs. Bunche is Harris' sister.
Bunche, noted U. S. Negro
leader, is an undersecretary of
the United Nations and a mem
ber of the Board of Governors
of the American Red Cross.
Rosenberg said Harris' body
bore no marks of violence. His
wallet was missing.
Mrs. Harris found her husband
on the floor, his mouth gagged
with -a towel and his feet and
hands bound with rope.
LONG TIME NO SEE
Ogallala, Neb. (U.R) No one
was hurt in a pile-up involving
four autos near here. But the
four drivers found they lived
within 10 miles of each other in
Berkeley, Calif. . .
Sue Highway Board
Fossil, Ore. U.R) Suits add
ing up to more than $200,000
have been filed in Wheeler coun
ty by nine Mitchell residents
against the State Highway Com
mission as a result of a flash
flood which damaged the town
July 13.
The suits charge that the state,
by construction of the road and
bridges through Mitchell, caused
the waters to inundate and
damage property.

Chemical Reactions Seen
Northern Lights Cause
Los Angeles - (U.R) The
"northern lights" and the "air
glow" after sunset may be
caused by simple chemical reac
tions in the high altitude.
Charles A. Barth, graduate
research geophysicist at UCLA
here, recently discovered in lab
ratory experiments one of these
reactions the combination of
atomic nitrogen with ozone.
The puzzling phenomenon of
airglow or aurora borealis,
which mostly consists of invis
ible light, Barth suggests, may
be caused by similar chemical
reactions.
Salem Area Rancher
Killed by Own Truck
Salem (U.R) A 72-year-old
Salerp area sheep rancher was
killed yesterday when his truck
rolled down a driveway and
crushed him against a concrete
gate post.
Victim of the freak accident
was Chester Cannon. He had
just left his truck to open a
gate leading from a pasture to
his home when the accident hap
pened. Cannon was pinned be
tween the post and the forward
portion of the truck bed.

enrollments on the increase all
over the nation, more attention
should be given to developing
junior college facilities.
Dr. B. Lamar Johnson, pro
fessor of education, said that
"properly supported junior col
leges are doing an excellent job
of training their students, both
for college entry and for posi
tions requiring only two years
of college training." He gave
his opinion following a nation
wide tour of colleges and universities.
