Volkswagen Sales Cutting Into Field
Of Foreign Car Market in United States
New York (U.R) Car manu
facturers were in fierce com
petition for sales in 1952 when
a beetle-like little German car
went on display in New York
and drew immediate attention
from American car buyers.
The tiny runabouts with the
name "Volkswagen" (People's
Car) syphoned off . sales from
American built cars with claims
of economy (price from $1,495
up), low operating cost (35 to 40
miles to a gallon of gasoline),
and ease of parking.
Workmanship Claimed Suparior
Volkswagen bucked the for
eign car competition by calling
attention to its 36 horsepower
air cooled engine-in-the-rear, its
custom made features, and
claims of superior German work
manship. It began to eat into the sales
of such favorite foreign cars
as the sporty Jaguar and the
trim MG which had been sell
ing at the rate of 12,000 to 14,
000 a year, with most sales con
centrated oil the East Coast.
Within two years the demand
for Volkswagens encouraged its
West German manufacturers to
build a national distribution
service. By 1955 there were 360
franchised dealers operating
from coast to coast and Volks
wagen sales were better than
ever. The company had cornered
60 per cent of the foreign car
market and sold 33,000 passen
ger automobiles last year. At the
same time the sale of other

foreign cars slipped steadily.
"We sold 20,323 Volkswagens
in the United States in the first
five months of this year," the
distributing agent said. "Our
sales for the year will be 40,
000 to 45,000. We'll do even
better next year."
Jaguar Trails in Sales
So far this year Volkswagen's
nearest competitor among some
50 foreign cars is the Jaguar
with 1,334 sales in the first five
months, MG with 1,299 sales and
the Austin Healy with 1,223
sales.
Volkswagen expects to get a
steadily increasing share of sales
normally going to American car
manufacturers. The company is
particularly interested in devel
oping Volkswagen as a second
car for two and three-car famil
ies. It has used some techniques
surprising to American car buy
ers. It never changes its models
from year to year. It uses the
same basic chassis for all mod
els. And it uses, only very low
pressure sales practices, includ
ing a long wait for delivery.

three years ago I laughed and
got a job I've been with Jack
Benny ever since.
I was working in the East as
a sportscaster and had the good
fortune to be included in a gen
eral audition for the Jack Benny
program. Jack, as part of the au
dition, kidded the boxtop craze
by inviting his listeners to tear
the tops from their automobiles
and mail them in.
I was convulsed and my voice,
trained to project over the roars
of football crowds, carried to
the microphones. I've been
laughing with and at Jack from
that time 'til now.
Boo-boos' Turned About
I'm fortunate to have been as
sociated with a star with a real
sense of humor who appreciates
the "fluff" or "boo-boo" because
I've contributed more than my
share. Jack and his writeYs have
been wise , enough to turn mis
takes on the show to advantage.
For example, who can forget
Mary Livingston's "Chiss Sweez
Sandwich" or her car which was
at the filling station on the
"Grass Reek."
Once I signed off one of the
CBS-TV shows with a distortion
of the sponsor's pet slogan. It
came out "Be Lucky, Go Happy."
Jack promptly assigned my wife,
Lois, the announcing chores for
the following three weeks to
my distress and Lois' delight.
Equipment Moved Backstage
Contrary to many shows, the
equipment on the Benny TV
show is located behind the stage
with only the microphone booms
on the stage. This is done so the
audience can have a clear view
of the players. Three cameras
are used. One on the left is for
long shots, one on the right for
medium shots and one in the
middle for closeups.
This camera in the middle is
a favorite of Jack's. We have a
joke that it's one of a kind and
CBS uses it only on the Benny
show. It has a special device
that "makes a 62-year-old man
look 39."
More Subdued Colors L
For Auto Seat Covers
Chicago (U.PJ The trend is
toward more subdued designs
and colors in automobile seat
covers and interiors.
"It's the trend because people
want it that way," said Howard
F. Leopold, president of Ero
Manufacturing Co., a leading
producer of seat covers.
"It's something like a change
in women's fashions."
Leopold said automobile-makers
must be keenly aware of
public taste. Forecasts for 1957
passenger cars indicate that in
terior styling colors will be more
subdued, he said.
But he added that there is one
exception to the general trend.
Californians still go for the loud
er colors and styles.
