Canyonville Fire
Damages Buildings
Canyonville U.PJ Fire here
yesterday afternoon destroyed a
plumbing warehouse and caused
extensive damage to two other
business establishments and
three cabins in the immediate
vicinity.
-Six fire companies from sur
rounding towns converged on
the town to help battle the
flames which broke out in the
plumbing warehouse about noon.
Damaged extensively were a
grocery store, Harry's Super ser
vice, and the Forester's club.
Three cabins, all frame struc
tures of about three rooms, also
were severely damaged by the
fire.
Cause of the fire was not im
mediately determined.
Great Game of Convention Politics Kicked Off To Confused Start by Demos
Chicago OJ.R) The great
game of convention politics, as
played by the Democrats, was
off to a confused start today.
Who's in charge here, anyway?
It was the late Will Rogers
who sagely observed: "I am a
member of no regularly organ
ized political party. I am a Dem
ocrat." Here everybody thought Stev
enson had the nomination wrap
ped up and sold, and suddenly
a grinning man from Missouri
scrambled the whole business.
The inside dope, on this first con
vention day, is that the show
could blow wide open.

"Don't know," he replied. "We

One of the pressing problems
as the convention got underway,
was whether modern electronics
has made enough, strides in the
last four years to eliminate the
glare made on TV by Chairman

rumors that the chairman may

signs there had said, "Harriman
Can Win." But overnightly, after
Mr. Truman's endorsement, they
blossomed out with "Harriman
Will Win."

gizzard of the Democratic party,
reporters found Republican Rep.

"Thought maybe I'd learn
something," said Hillings. "I'm
going right now."
Governor Harriman was intro

a vigorous 66-year-old and was
asked how he lelt.
"I feel fine, but I'm not 66,"
said the governor. "I'm 64. But
