Central Church of Christ
Benefits From Gartner Will
The Central Church of Christ,
608 North Central ave., was one
of three beneficiaries in the
will of Mrs. Sarah Gartner who
died in Medford several years
ago. Mrs. Gartner left her
money to the Adventist church,
her nurse of many years, and
the Central Church of Christ,
to be shared equally.
Part of the money was spent
for the residence at 523 North
Bartiett st., which is used for
a parsonage. The house, for
merly owned by the Rev. El
more J. Gilstrap, minister of the
church, is of California type
architecture with stucco exterior.-
Besides purchasing the par
sonage, the Church spent an
additional part of the legacy
to have the church building
painted. The painting is now in
progress. The church had not
been painted since it was .built
approximately 14 years ago.
This is the first time for a
number of years that the Cen
tral church has been out of debt.
The mortgage on the church
building was paid when the will
was first settled.
Dedication services will be
held at the church later in the
year.
Many Activities
For Baptist
Church Members
A missionary conference and a
Sunday school convention are
scheduled next week for mem
bers and staff of the First Bap

Al Kantor. The Kantors, who
work among the migrant labor
ers at, Firebaugh, Calif., will
visit in the homes and take part
in all of the regularly scheduled
services of . the church. ,..
A fellowship supper to wel
come the Kantors will be held
Wednesday evening at 6:45 at the
church. The meal -will be plann
ed and arranged by the social
committee. Following the sup
per, the mid-week service will
feature the annual "Christmas
in August" project. At this time
gifts will be brought for the
children to whom the Kantors
minister.
On Saturday three members
of the. church staff leave for
Mount Hermon, Calif., to attend
a Sunday school conference. The
conference, sponsored by the
Scripture Press association,
brings together church school
leaders from all parts of the
West to discuss and plan for the

Moslem's Bride
Returns to Home
Palo Alto, Calif. (U.R) A
young mother, her "nightmare
marriage" to a Moslem now a
part of the past, prepared today
to get a job as a bookkeeper
to support herself and her baby.
Mrs. Helen Subbagh, 27, re
turned here Thursday night with
her 22-monthold son, Paul, end
ing a 7000-mile flight from Bagh
dad, Iraq, and the Moslem house
hold where she was a "slave."
Her romance began in Seattle
where her husband, Abdul Sub
bagh, was formerly a student.
She said her husband falsely
claimed to be a Christian when
they were married in a Method
ist church.
She went with him to Baghdad.
There, she said, he "changed."
Women in Iraq get no re
spect whatever," she said. "My
husband tried to make me live
like an Arab woman. When he
got angry, I would be slugged,
shoved, spit at and cursed . . .
In Iraq, men marry for one
reason only to have a alave."
Mrs. Subbagh fled Iraq with
her son, aided by the American
consul in Baghdad.

Moscow U.R) Japanese
Foreign . Minister Mamoru Shi

to shake their determination
that the Kurile islands, taken

will remain Russian.
"They still stand on the same
position. They said the. islands

Some sources here believed
the talk would be a decisive fac
