ilyn Monroe's
Bodyguards Irk
Press in Britain
London (U.R) The British
press criticized actress Marilyn
Monroe today for using "four
Gestapo - style bodyguards" to
keep reporters and photogra
phers at a distance. ,
Guards took a camera away
from Daily Mail photographer
Edwin Sampson Tuesday when
Miss Monroe reported for the
first day of shooting her film,
"The Sleeping Prince," with
actor Laurence Olivier.
"He was jumped on by her
four strong-arm men in best po
lice state style" charged the
Daily Sketch's Simon Ward.
The Conservative Daily Tele
graph also took note of the un
usual bodyguards, who it said
were "big enough to clean up
the soiled parts of Soho (Lon
don's toughest district) comfort
ably between quarter sessions."
The Daily Mail identified the
bodyguard who seized the cam
era as Roger Hunt, who, it said,
also has a bodyguard.
Miss Monroe's bodyguards,
reinforced by studio police, took
Sampson's camera to Olivier,
who ordered that the film be
confiscated, the paper said.
Ward quoted a studio official
as saying that "no photographer
has the right to take pictures in
the studio without permission."
He said it was the last story he
would write about the curva
ceous, blonde Miss Monroe,
whom he described as "celluloid
royalty."

Tlying Laboratory' Will Seek Mysteries Of Hurricanes
West Palm Beach, Fla. U.R)
Sometime this month a silver
gray "flying laboratory" will
soar over the hurricane breeding
ground in the South Atlantic.
The mission of this specially
equipped B50 will be historic: to
launch a phase of aerial investi
gation in which meteorologists
hope they will learn the myster
ies of the ponderous, death deal
ing hurricanes.
Will Forecast Path
If the Weather Bureau is suc
cessful in its unprecedented
study it will be able to forecast
accurately the path of the big
tropical storms from one to three
days in advance.
If it is a little more successful
and perhaps a little lucky
it may learn enough to diminish
these awesome spectacles of na
ture or divert them to relatively
harmless courses.
In either event, the result may
save biHions of dollars in prop
erty damage and the lives of
thousands of persons from the
Atlantic Seaboard througn
The man in charge of this new
project, "Operation Hurricane,"
is lanky, Texas-born Robert
Simpson. A, hard driving admin
istrator, Simpson has had many
years of tropical weather ex
perience at Miami. Puerto Rico,
the Canal Zone and Honolulu.
Staff of Authorities
Under him is a staff of 27 sci
entists and meteorologists, in
cluding weather authorities from
several leading universities. A
dozen more scientists are as
signed temporarily to the proj
ect. The headquarters is a recon
verted building that served as a
night club in the Florida boom
of the 20s.
The study was recommended
by Congress last year after the
most disastrous hurricane season
in history caused S2.000.TJOO.000
in damage and killed 1,500 persons.
