Reports Required for Household Employees
Employers of household help
were reminded today by W. V.
Nusbaum, manager of the Med
ford social security office, that
they are required to report earn
ings of any employee earning
$50 or more during a calendar
quarter.
There have been some indica
tions that this provision of the
social security law has not been
thoroughly understood in this
area, he said.
People who worked regularly
in one household have been cov
ered by the law since 1951. The
1954 amendments brought under
social security, beginning in
1955, all household workers who
are paid cash wages of S50 or
more m a calendar quarter even
though they may not work reg
ularly for the- employer, Nus
baum said.
Employers having household
help for whom they are not al
ready making reports should re
quest a copy of leaflet OASI-21
from the Medford social security
office, he said.-This leaflet dis
cusses the household employer's
duties-under the social security
law and contains a tear-off post
card to he used to get on the
mailing list for regular report
blanks.
When an emp!oyees earnings
are not reported properly, not
only does he or she fail to get
credit for the earnings for re
tirement purposes, but the em
ployer is subject to penalties pre
scribed by law in such cases,
Nusbaum added.
