On THe Side

Have you a daughter who is
a bachelorette. or a son who Is
a single man? Has either decided
on a matrimonial mate? All
single young people should have
a knowledge of character anal
ysis to aid m choosing a worth
while life partner. They should
know for example, that long
slender hands indicate a dream
er. Square hands reveal the pos
sessor is practical and has good
chances for success. Red-haired
people usually have healthy
children. A receding chin doesn't
mean that a man is a weak
character. On the contrary, it in
dicates he is obstinate and strong
willed. A high forehead doesn't
Indicate unusual Intelligence.
Many a low brow is very smart,
successful fellow. Blondes are
not as neurotic as brunettes and,
therefore, being less irritable
are easier to get along with.
Sidelights
In Continental Kurope etiquet
te demands the kissing form of
salutation be restricted to mar
ried women. Hence the song
titled "I Kiss Your Hand, Ma
dame"... The pot name Sir
Laurence Olivier has for his wife
Vivien Leigh is "Puss." Some
husbands have curious pet
names for their spouses. I know
a fellow who calls his wife
"Butch" ... As for the claim that
men who are lucky at cards are
unlucky in love, there was one
notable exception. That highly
successful lover, Casanova, was
very lucky at cards. His favorite
game was faro. . . Who is respon
sible for the horrible idea of
putting tomatoes in clam chow
der? That is a culinary crime
comparable to putting a poached
egg on corned beef hash.
Brides
At church weddings 60 per
per cent of the brides arrive
late. How about your bride? Not
long ago when a bride arrived
at the church 10 minutes be
hind schedule, the bridegroom
reprimanded her very sharply.
The bride, a redhead, answered
in kind. That's the only quarrel
between a bride and groom I
have heard of taking place on the
church steps. Still, last I heard
of this couple they were very
happily married.
Asides
Zsa Zsa Gabor recently said.
"None of my ex-husbands has
married again. They know how
awful marriage can be" . . .
Those, who should know, say
the most effective disguise Is a
re-shaped nose or an artificial
nose. Incidentally, those who
say Hitler is still alive claim he
had a facial operation which
called for a re-shaped nose.
Bar
"At our bar," writes John
Koeppler noted San Franclsca
cafe maestro, "we average 20
drinks to a fifth. I don't see
how a respectable drink can be
made any less than 1V4 ounces.
We do not permit a bartender
to use a measuring glass. The
sight of a bartender measuring
out a drink as though afraid tt)e
customer might get a drop too
much puts a respectable profes
sion to shame."
Please Note
Note a $15,000 Las Vegas,
Nev. debt was paid In silver dol
lars. What is your guess as to
the weight of 13,000 silver dol
lars? How much help would a
fellow need to carry it to the
bank?
Passing By
Lynne Gordon. Smart looking
professional hypnotist. One of
the few her sex so engaged. In
hor night club entertaining
Lynne specializes in hynotising
men and making them act fool
ishly. This always goes over big
with the females present. Of
course, the men consent to be
ing hypnotized and cooperate
with the hypnotist. It is said
nobody can be hypnotized
against his will. However, I have
heard differently. Anyway,
think of the danger of a situa
tion in which a woman could
hypnotize a man without regard
to his consent or cooperation.
Incidentally it is claimed that
women born under Scorpio have
magnetic eyes and can to some
extent hypnotize a man. That is
why so many men propose to
Scorpio girls and wonder the
next morning why they did it.
Or, so say the stargazers.
Fans
The first mechanical air con
ditioning gadget invented 102
years ago is still very popular
as a summertime cooler off. I
am referring to the electric fan,
invented in 1854. Incidentally,
who first said, "I have a suppres
sed desire to throw an eggg in
to an electric fan?" This has
been credited to O. O. Mclntyre,
Irvin Cobb, Fannie Hurst and
Will Rogers. However, the man
who first voiced it was Oliver
Herford.

gangsterism I virtually signed
a warrant for my own arrest."
Purcell recalled that Port
