Miss Myhre is a graduate of
Medford Senior high school and
is working as a dental assistant
for Dr. R. W. McNair. Mr. Pow
lowski is a graduate of Jackson
ville Hish school and is employed
by Kogap Lumber Industries
during the summer. He will at
tend Southern Oregon college
this fall.

To Become Bride

daughter, Juanita Swindler to
Ailnn Gosnell. son of Mr. and
Mrs. Arnold Gosnell of Sams
Valley.
The wedding will be held at
the home of the bride's parents
August 31 at 7:30 p.m.
Miss Swindler is a graduate of
Crater High school and is em
ployed by the Federal Savings
and Loan association as a teller.
Mr. Gosnell is a sander for the
Fir-Ply mill.
Surprise Party
At Medford Park
Honors Visitors
Mrs. Stanley Morgan, former
Medford residents now living in
Phoenix, Ariz., is visiting In the
city. Mrs. Morgan was honored
at a surprise party given by
friends July 30 at Hawthorne
park. The gathering included
members of Wenonah club, the
American Legion auxiliary and
the auxiliary to Crater Lake
post, Veterans of Foreign Wars,
organizations in which Mrs. Mor
gan was active when she lived
in Medford and to which she still
belongs.
Attending were Mrs. Frank
Martin, Mrs. Floyd Lewis, Mrs.
Ralph White, Mrs. Leo Williams,
Mrs. Ross Minneci, Mrs. Frank
Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Lusk,
Mrs. O. O. DeBerry, Mrs. Russell
Zundel, Mrs. Frank Vosika, Mrs.
Douglas Vosika, Mrs. Fred Law
rence, and Mrs. Morgan.
The Morgans left Medford be
cause of Mr. Morgans health,
which is said to be much im
proved. Mrs. Morgan is visiting
her mother, Mrs. Ewald Schulz,
and her aunt, Mrs. Augusta
Moore, at their home, 413 West
Second street.
Relatives Spend
Sunday Together
At Mountain Home
Gold Hill Five cousins, rang
ing in ages from 71 to 84 years,
enjoyed a picnic and day's visit
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Crow, Gold Hill, last
Sunday.
The Crow home, above the
Rogue river on the north side
of Blackwell hill, has a setting
of native trees and the couple
maintains a beautiful garden and
picnic area. Mr. and Mrs. Crow
are both members of early Ore
gon families and since their re
tirement have developed a mine
and their garden of flowers,
trees and vegetables surround
ing a mountain cabin.
The visiting cousins were Mrs.
Ida Nelson, Mrs. Cindy Johnson,
Mrs. Anna Davis and Mr. and
Mrs. C. E. Lindemood.
Gold Star Mothers will hold
a potluck picnic at Hawthorne
park Tuesday, August 7, at 11:30
a.m. All Gold Star mothers are
invited to meet behind the Girl
Scout headquarters. Thqse at
tending should bring their own
table service. '

Most startling sight In Fifth
Avenue college shops just open
ing for girls eager to get their
back-to-campus wardrobes: Col
orful skin tight leotards.
College girls hired to help one
store sell its campus clothes
wear the leotards in bright
green, red, blue or black under,
knee-length wool skirts. Called
"glamour gams." the leotards
are made of nylon stretch yarn
so they fit snugly from waist
to toes.
They'll be worn under Ber
muda shorts on campuses too, a
college clothes expert predicted,
and used as dormitory lounge
pants with matching blouses.
A' sandwich won an Omaha,
Neb., woman two tickets to Eu
rope and $1,000 this week.
Mrs. Fern Snider entered a
man-sized cheese, corned beef,
sauerkraut and rye bread sand
wich in a national sandwich idea
contest and won first prize over
some 600 other entries.
At an all-sandwich lunch here
to announce winners Mrs. Sni
der burst into tears as she picked
up her prize. She supports her
children and invalid husband
by cooking in a bowling alley
restaurant in Omaha.
Judges for the contest, spon
sored by the National Restaur
ant association, had a few bad
moments too. They nibbled their
way through some astonishing
entries, including one sandwich
made of peanut butter and choco
late bars broiled under a low
flame.
A convention for women only
presents special problems. Wom
en executives from all parts of
the world came here this week
for a two weeks convention of
the Soroptimist clubs.
First crisis: One woman dele
gate discovered she was unable
to zip herself into her evening
gown for the first banquet. She
raced down the corridor of the
Waldorf Astoria hotel, hailed a
surprised bellboy and enlisted
him to close the back zipper.
Second crisis: Kaye Witmer,
stage director for the conven
tion oaceant depicting the 35
years since the first soropto
mist club was founded for pro
fessional women, needed two
dressers to help models get into
fashion show costumes.
Miss Witmer, a Harrisburg,
Pa., executive, hastily asked a
secretary to telephone the hotel
desk and order two dressers sent
to the ballroom.
"Send two bureaus to the ball
room," the secretary ordered the
desk clerk, after Miss Witmer
had left the room. At the last
minute somebody discovered the
mixup and got two neople, not
bedroom bureaus, backstage.

ding. The couple are graduates of

Miss McClearen is working at
the A and W Root Beer stand in
Grants Pass during the summer.
Private Hobbs is serving with

Square Dancing
Planned at Fair
Two nights of square dancing,
Friday and Saturday, August
10 and 11 are scheduled for the
Josephine County Fair at Grants
Pass and sponsored by Rogue
Valley Square Dance Callers as
sociation. Friday night Harley Smith of
Los Angeles will be the featured
caller. Saturday night dancing
will be jamboree style with all
local callers participating.
All callers of the association
are cancelling scheduled dances
for the two nights and ask square
dancers to attend the dances at
the fair.
Lady Elks
Lady Elks will meet in the
lodge dining room for luncheon
and cards Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
All wives of Elks are invited.
Auxiliary
Awards
Announced
Medford American Legion
auxiliary members received a
number of awards and appoint
ments at the annual department
convention held at Albany July
26-29. Mrs. Earl Bigalow, de
partment American chairman,
Miss Laura York, Mrs. Clyde
Fichtner, Mrs. Dorothy Sutter
and Mrs. George Smith repre
sented the Medford unit.
Mrs. Bigalow received an
award of merit from Henry
Keneally in recognition of her
"outstanding work" as volun
teer chairman of the Heart Sun
day program of the American
Heart association.
Mrs. Leo Williams received a
personal award for "outstanding
work" on membership. The Med
ford unit received a community
service award, a history award,
a child welfare honorable men
tion and a daily prize for 100
per cent attendance at the con
vention. Mrs. Williams was appointed
department hospital representa
tive in charge of the hospital
volunteer program at Camp
White. Miss York was elected
president of District 13 which in
cludes Cave Junction, Grants
Pass, Central Point, Ashland and
Medford and she will also be a
member of the department exec
utive board.
Mrs. Clarence B. Grund, Dal
las, was elected department pres
ident of the American Legion
Auxiliary of Oregon.
Mrs. Harold Leach, Bonne
ville, Oregon department presi
dent of the auxiliary, presided
at the business sessions of the
Auxiliary. Highlight of the Sat
urday session was the premier
of the Girls' State film which
was made at Oregon Girls' State
this year.
Navy Mothers To Hold
Picnic Tuesday Noon
Navy Mothers of America will
hold a picnic at the home of Mrs.
C. W. Childers on Palmer Creek
road, Tuesday morning. The
members plan to leave Medford
at 9:30 a.m. Those attending may
inquire at the Upper Applegate
store on Applegate road near
McKee bridge for directions.
Members are asked , to take a
pot luck dinner.

Home Accident
Program Topic
Home accidents, their types,
causes, results and prevention,
will be discussed on a TV public
show to be presented on KBES
TV Sunday, August 5, from 5:30
to 6 p.m.
As home accidents are respon
sible for 30 per cent of deaths
among young chldren, the Ore
gon Public Health association is
arranging this panel program in
order to inform the public as to
ways of guarding against these
tragic accidents.
Dr. Ralph Thompsen, ortho
pedic surgeon, Dr. Marie Foland,
physician and surgeon and Fire
Chief Gordon Barker are on the
panel. Each man will point out
the different types of common
accidents and how to prevent
them some small amount of care
and forthought.
Mrs. Ivan Burton, of the Med
ford chapter of the health as
sociation will moderate the program.

Honor Husbands
A swimming party was given
by Medford Jaycettes for their
husbands last Wednesday night
at McKee Bridge. A picnic sup
per was served.
An exchange of favorite re
cipes will at the next Jaycette
meeting to be held August 15 at
