a number of parties during a visit to the valley last week. A small group
was invited to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Wimberly Jr., on South
Barneburg road Wednesday morning to meet Mrs. Smith. Pictured with

July and early August days have been filled with parties,
many of them held outdoors in patios and gardens. Some of the
events honored Visitors here from far-away cities to visit relatives
and friends and to attend the 1956 Oregon Shakespearean fes
tival plays.
Among the guests were Governor Elmo Smith and Mrs. Smith
who came down from Salem to attend the opening of the festival
Wednesday night and who were honored at a number of other
functions both in Medford and in Ashland.
Parties for Mrs. Smith included a small breakfast at the home
of Mrs. Carl E. Wimberly Jr., Medford, a coffee hour at the home
of Mrs. James Busch in Ashland and a tea at the Women's Civic
clubhouse in Ashland for which Mrs. Philip Stansbury was chair

Mrs. Marian Goeltz, Salt Lake City, (at right) is pictured here
with her aunt, Mrs. Charles S. Newhall, Old Stage road, during a
visit in Medford which ended Thursday. Mrs. Goeltz, who was ac
companied to Medford by Mrs. John R. MacArthur and Miss Muriel
MacArthur (upper right), makes frequent trips to Medford to visit her
aunt. She is known in Salt Lake City for her work with the Girl Scouts,
Junior league and other organizations.
Among visitors to the valley this week were Mrs. John R. MacArthur
and her daughter. Miss Muriel MacArthur, Bronxville, N. Y. The two women
made a brief visit with Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Ruhl, 2404 East Main
street, and left Thursday again for the east. The visitors were honored at a
number of small parties during their stay end made a trip Monday to the
Oregon coast.

ing dinner and play of the Shakespearean festival.
A recent garden party in Medford was that given by Women
of Rotary at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Brainerd, 226 Valley
View drive. Called a "Cotton Coffeete," funds derived from the
event went to Rogue Valley Memorial hospital. About 150 Medford
and Ashland women attended.
Assisting Mrs. Brainerd were Mrs. John H. Bunker, who is presi
dent of Women of Rotary, and a large committee of Rotaryannes.
Pouring were Mrs. D. Kirkland West, Mrs. D. Ford McCormick, Mr.
S. Ralph Dippel, Mrs. William W. P. Holt, Mrs. Charles W. Lemery,
Mrs. Royal E. Bebb, Mrs. A. Orin Schenck and Mrs. C. C. Leonard.

Mrs. Paul Reinhardt, Chicago, and her small daughter, Anne,
are spending several weeks in Medford with Mrs. Reinhardt's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Daniels, 407 Park street. Mrs. Reinhardt, the former
Clara Daniels, ployed leading roles for the Oregon Shakespearean
festival for a number of years and she is enjoying the plays of the
current season.

Mrs. Richard C. Ashcom of Detroit, Mich., and her three children are spending the summer weeks with Mrs.
Ashcom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tumy, 705 Park street. The children, Jeffrey, aged 3, Kathie, 8, and Julie, 10,
spend most of their time in the Tumy garden with their toys and books. Doctor Ashcom, who practices medicine
in Detroit, will arrive August 19 for a visit and the family will then return home by plane. In the fall the Ashcoms
plan to leave Detroit to make their home in Midland, Mich., a smaller city.

and Mrs. P. f. Brainerd on Valley View drive. Among the guests was Mrs. Kenneth Campbell (at left), member
of the auxiliary to Medford Lions club, and Mrs. W. H. Crowder (at right), a new member of Women of Rotary.
Mrs. S. Ralph Dippel was among the women who poured during the morning. Guests were received from 10
o'clock to 12 noon, and a substantial sum of money was donated to Rogue Valley Memorial hospital.
