American Teen-Ager Discovers Reason
For Attraction of Europe To Tourists
Fdllor's nte: Knan 8trtrh. 1. ha:

artlrlrt for her hometown paper, the
Camden, N.J., Cotirl.r.Pnit which is
published by the Stretch familv. In
the followlnr dispatch she sums up
her Impressions.
By SUSAN STRETCH
Written for United Presi
Madrid (U.R) As an average
American teenager in Europe, I
have been surprised, delighted.
inspired, disappointed, awed and
intrigued.
Each new day discloses tome
new thrill for rne and, at the
close, I find myself a little bit
more in love with the "Conti
nent." If my impressions are
typical, is it any wonder that
Americans return each year in
ever increasing numbers?
I have traveled through Italy
Switzerland, a tiny portion of
France and Spam. I am accom
panied by my sister, Linda, and
my aunt, Jane Stretch. We plan
to see more of France its well as
England and Scotland before we
sail for home in September.
Each of the, countries has its
own flavor.
The Italians tend to be reck
less in whatever they do. They
are notorious for their truly
nerve-wracking driving. But the
men's recklessness in romance is
admired -and even envied. Ital
ian men are natural born flirts
from the time they are old
enough to say, "Ciao, bella." (Hi.
beautiful) to the day when their
beards turn gray.
Unfailing Honesty
What endears the Swiss is
their unfailing honesty. It is
such a relief to discover that
Switzerland has no "rackets" or
"tourist traps." Anyone will get
his money's worth at a store
there and a purchase is usually
accompanied by the warmest
smile.
Spaniards are lively, vivac
ious, fun - loving individuals.
Bull-fighting and flamenco danc
ing are the two most colorful
arts. I love the flamenco danc
ing and have become an ardent
bull -fighting enthusiast. The
young men of Spain compliment
lady passersby by yelling "Gua
pa," which means beautiful, or
"Bebe," whose meaning is ob
vious.
Favorite Places
Among the favorite places 1
have seen are Rome with the
most beautiful edifice in the
world, St. Peter's Basilica. Ven
ice is unbelievable. The trans
portation is by boat or bicycle.
The gondola lends the romantic
authenticity and music is for-
American Believed
Murdered in Pakistan
London U.R) The London
Daily Express said today that
Pakistani tribesmen may have
murdered a 32-year-old Ameri
can and carried off the pretty
Swedish girl he was about to
marry.
In a dispatch from its corres
pondent in Kabul, Afghanistan,
the express said the tribesmen
are believed to have murdered
Peter Winant, nephew of John G
Winant, former U.S. ambassador
to London.
Winant and his fiancee. Gun
nel Gummerson, 25, disappeared
two months ago, seven days after
leaving Kabul on a hitch-hiking
trip to Europe. They were last
heard of in the North African
town of Shiberghan. 30 miles
from the Russian frontier.

Geneva is enhanced by for
mal flower gardens which color
the streets. On lovely Lake
Geneva, this beautiful city has
all the social life one could de
sire. The Costa Brava is the
Riviera of Spain. It is more
charming, though, as it had not
been terribly commercialized
yet.
If I had to choose one Euro

would be Madrid. It has all the
glamor of big city living plus all
the freedom of the country in
its outskirts. I love it.

TRAINS RACE MOSQUITOES
New York (U.Rj The Transit

gers on trains travelling over
five miles of marshland to the

the marshes, the TA advised its
motormen to speed up their
