Parents on the Run
I recently read a fine book by
Marguerite and Willard Beecher,
entitled "Parents on the Run.
As the Beech
ers point out,
their idea is
that today
with many

any way, parents have abdicated,
and are on the defensive. The
children are running the fam
ily which I think most parents:
who have been independent en
ough to retain some sense,
would agree is very bad for both
the children and the family. As
the Beechers say, children are
much happier when they feel
that they are part of the family
and are helping mother and
father. My earliest memory of
my brother Milton goes back to
a day when he was perhaps two
years old and I was five. I can
still see him carrying into the
house an empty five-gallon oil
can that he had found some
where and which he thought fa
ther might put to some good use
somewere. I can remember how
pleased my parents were with
this sign of concern on his part
for the family welfare he
touched them deeply and they
never forgot the event and its
significance.
One day recently, in my
daughter Bernice's home, I saw
her little daughter Peggy trying
hard to help in the kitchen. At
her tender age she was much
more of a hindrance than a help,
but her mother was careful to
leave her with the impression
that her assistance was much
needed and much appreciated.
This was so wise because the nor
mal child so wants to feel that
he or she is a part of the family
that he or she surely belongs.
Things children do in their at
tempts to help should always be
noticed and appreciated. A few
words of praise and thanks go so
far to make a child and an
adult feel secure and wanted
and a part of the group.

just ignore the child and walk
out of the room. The child would
quickly learn that a tantrum is
no fun when there is no anxious
and excited person looking on

One of the worst things many
weak parents do is to threaten
punishment when they haven't
the guts to carry it out. In a
few days the child has their
measure, and after that he has
only contempt for them. One
should never threaten a child
with punishment. If punishment
is what he is asking for and
children often seem to ask for it
it should come down on him in
stantly. It should be over with
quickly, and then 'there should
be prompt reconciliation and "no
hard feelings."
One of the best ways of pun
ishing many children is to ban
ish them to their room with in
structions to come out only
when they are ready to behave

Contracts were awarded for a
base bid of $258,415 on remodel
ing Southern Oregon college
gymnasium into a college union
building by the state board of
higher education Tuesday.
The bid was considerably less
than the architect's estimate of
$279,395.
The remodeling job is to be
completed within 240 calendar
days after awarding the contract,
according to contract specifia
tions. All contracts went to lowest
bidders. Bidders were general
contract, Bessonette and Graff,
$185,645, Ausland Construction
company of Grants Pass, $198,
840; electrical contract, Speeck
Electric, $29,500, and Electronic
Service, $33,950; mechanical con
tract, Stewart Mechanical, $43,
270, and Brownie Plumbing and

Pacific Corporation recommend
ed a two-for-one split of the
outstanding shares of common
stock of the company.
A special meeting of the
stockholders was called for Sep
tember 10 to vote on the stock
split recommendation.
Other action taken by the
directors was to declare the
regular quarterly divident of 45
cents per common share and the
regular 25 cents per share quar
terly dividend basis and also
