Can Mother Mark Baby?
Many an unhappy mother
makes herself utterly miserable
for years wondering if something
she did, perhaps about the time
her boy was conceived, or later
when he was growing in her
womb, could have produced a
harelip or a portwine mark or a
big hairy mole on his face. Many
a mother of a mentally retarded
child will ask me if the child's
lack of intelligence could be due
to the fact that at the time he was
conceived the father was drink
ing, or she was very sad over
the death of her mother.
I can assure these unhappy
women that nothing they did
could have marked or changed
the child. Experts tell me that
when a baby girl is born, she has
already in her ovaries all the ova
or tiny eggs that she can use
during her life-time. So far as
we know, nothing that she can
do can change these ova. In a
way she is just their custodian
until they are needed.
The father's spermatozoa also
are made some time before one
of them can unite with an ovum,
and hence it could not make any
difference even if the couple
were drunk at the time the child
was conceived. The ovum and
the spermatozoon would have
been made long before.

the ages of 72 and 91, burned
to death Monday night when fire
swept a three-story frame nurs
ing home here.
One patient, Mrs. Sherry Fred
ericks of Poplar Bluff, was res
cued by a minister and a service
station operator.
The dead included Tom Gard,
83, and Mrs. Paralee Dugger,
85, both of Fisk, Mo.; Mrs. Har
riet Shaffer, 88, Maiden, Mo.;
James F. Stringfellow, 73, and
Mrs. Rosa Allwood, 72, both of
Chaffee, Mo.; Nancy A. Deason,
91, and Mrs. Mattie Mae Young.
76, both of Dexter, Mo., and
B. O. Kinnemon, 76; and George
Casey, 81, both of Puxico.
