to Washington today with pho
tographs which may prove for
the first time whether tiie planet
Mars is capable of sustaining
life.

lis and their scienti.-t wives
spent nearly a month at the
1 1 .364-foot level of volcanic
mountain Manna Loa. studying
through spectrographs, the sun's
rays reflected off Mar; as the
planet sped unusually fast to
ward the earth.
After about a month of analy
sis at their VashiiKinn labora
tory, they will be able to tell
what ras are absorbed by the
atmosphere on Mars, thus learn
ing whether anything can live
there
"There is nothing I know of
recorded previously that com
pares with these plates." Keiss
said. He feels the photographs
will definitely contain informa
tion needed to reach a definite
conclusion.
The Mars project was tiie first
conducted at the new United
States Government Observatory
