Burke said in recent testi
mony before a congressional

"If a general war should start
with a surprise atomic attack,
naval forces operating well dis

portant part in the immediate
retaliation." he said.
"After the first blows on the
principal stationary targets are
struck by both sides, our mobile,
far ranging Navy alone may re
main sufficiently undamaged to
carry lorward a continuing pow
erful attack."

Stark had only kind words today
for a mysterious burglar. Her
home was burglarized Sunday
night of some SI. 900 in personal
items and cash. But Monday
night, while taking a bath. Miss
Stark heard a commotion on the
porch. She investigated and
found thai all the items stolen,
including a silver fox coat, had
been stacked neatly outside her

the state's part in the recent "Op
eration Alert" and found that
much remained to be done in
training, communications, local
government participation and
improved facilities.

Col. A. M. Sheets. CD direc
tor, said the most pressing need
was for state officials and de
partments to follow the lead of
federal officials in planning to
relocate their offices so that gov
ernment could continue during
an enemy attack.
Col. Sheets praised the pro
fessional behavior of state CD
workers, but that serious bottle
necks in communications devel
oped at all levels.
He said there were not enough
shortwave radio channels and
urged that counties increase

cept Mrs. Marchctti's purse
which she had with her in the
movie at the time of the collis
ion with the Stockholm. Mrs.
Marchetti said she slipped and
fell while climbing down a rope
ladder to a lifeboat. She was
still limping.
Mrs. Donald Graf and her
four-year-old daughter, Marilyn,
were the other two arrivals.
Mrs. Graf said she had been in
another room when the collision
occurred. She went to her daugh
ter's bedroom and dressed her

main deck.
