was reported here recently on
the University of California
campus.
The report was made by Dr.
Parker D. Trask. lecturer in
geological engineering, who rec
ently returned from an expedi
tion to the coasts of Peru and
Chile. He acted as chief scientist
in charge of the recent "Atlantis"
expedition.
The expedition carried on de
tailed marine geologic investiga
tions in the deep troughs lyins
to inn miles off the coasts of
eastern Smith America.
The deepest one found. Trask
reported, plunges some 26. ODD
feet down, or 930 feet deeper
than any previously recorded in
the area. The trench, lie said,
had walls. 1.500 leet below the
surrounding ocean floor and was
onlv three miles across in its
widest place and nearly 500 ;
miles long. It is 50 miles off the
Chilean coast.
